TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1867. THE LETTER TO THE DEAD. i DY THOMAS DUN N ENGLISH, M. D., PH. I. 'We remrmhr-r At tho Wl)riirnp m gallant MlMls slpplan linrt fallen, and ft iilnht, Juki before burying liiin, M ere came a letter Irom lier lie loved best. One of the xroiiD around Mi hodv a minister whoso tenderness wai womanly, broke the silent tenrlalnrsi with which ho Haw Hie dead letter; lie toek it anil laid It tn-onlhe brrnat or him whoie nnrolr heart win still: 'Bury 11 with Mm. Jle will see It when he wakes.' It was i hi- mihllmett lenience of till fuueral service." H. O'leayune. Comes tbe letter from a mother f Are a sister's longings there? Or the fondness of another, Loved and loving, young and fair ? Seek not now to know the writer, Seek not whence or why it came; Ai he died, his dimmed eyes paw her; As he died, he breathed her name. It has come o'er hills and valleys, Crossed o'er rivers, passed o'er lakes: "Unry it upon his bosom, lie will see it when he wakes." Bury the dead with the letter unread, There to remain, Till the soldier awakes from his slumber, To join iu the battle again. Ah 1 but never more to battle lie will march by beat of dram; Nevermore when fight is over Sigh for gentle peace to come; Nevermore to roll-call answer, Nevermore will pace his round, Keeping watch o'er sleeping comrades ' Strewn upon the chilly ground; Nevermore the light words utter While his heart with sadness aches: "Hury it upon his bosom, lie will see it when he wakes." Buryat deep with the soldier to sleep: " There let it lie, "While the green grass grows o'er the sleeper, And the world goes hurrying by. She who lingered as she wrote it O'er each tender word she penned, She perchance will find her sorrow With some later lover end. But for him those words of loving May survive when' time is o'er, And, though she forget her fondness, Greet him on the further shore. . Cross his arms and close his eyelids, 'Tis his slumber that he takes: "Bury it upon his bosom, He will see it when he wakes." Lay him to rest with the soroll on his breast, There, in the tomb, Till the startled dead shall awaken At the terrible day of doom. The Late Election. Tho fo!owiriK address hits been Issued ly tho Union Republican fclate Central Committee: Committee Hooms, No. llOo Chesnut street, Philauklphia, October 21,1807. Explanations of allures are always less agreeable than con gratulations upon success. At the same time, tbe former may be as profitable as the latter; for tbe uses of adversity are manifold. Regard ing tbe recent defeat of tbe Republican party as both a political misfortune and a national calamity, a short review of tbe facts and a few reflections thereon are not deemed out of place. Tbe most diligent and persistent efforts to arouse our friends from apathy, to Impress upon them the importance of the contest, tbe danger of defeat, and the necessity for action to averl it, Jailed to produce the usual and desired, results. The immediete cause of our failure Is apparent from the ollloial returns, compared with those of former years: In 18o5 the Republican vote was 2.'S8,400 ' the Democratio vote was 11j,710 Total 454,140 Majority lor Hartritiift, Auditor-General.. 22,lMiO In 1S0O the Republican vote was 807,274 " the Democratio vote was ..2M,uim Total 51)7,870 Mojoritv for Governor Geary 17,liS Iu i07 the Republican vote was 2W,824 " the JJumocrailc vole was 267,710 Total 531,570 Majority lor bharswood H thus appears that the total vote cast lu 1S0O exceeded that of 1S6j, 143,330; and that the total vole ol istiT tails short ol ine vote oi isoo, 02,810. On an examination of the details, It farther appears that the decrease this year is 40,710 on the Republican vote of 1800, and a decreaso of only 22.U1I0 on the Democratic vote of ISOli or, In other words, there were over 18,000 more Republicans who did not go to the polls at the last election than there were Demoorats. There are eitjbt counties lu the fctate viz., Allegheny, Kiadford, Crawford, Erie, Lancaster, Philadel phia, BchuylkiU, and York In every oue of which more Republican voters remained at home lhan were required to eleot Judge "Williams ; and In both Allegheny aud Philadelphia there were more than four times us many absentees as were needed to give us the Stute. In no cwunty except Philadelphia find Forest (the lalter by change of boundary line) did either party Increase the vote of last year. It is hoped these Dlaln figures will teach Re publicans the simple but important lesson that a mere numerical majority of voters will not carry au election, unless they are at the polls and vote on election day. General apathy, caused by au npiarent failure to appreciate the Importance of tne contest. Is the primary cause of our defeat. Resides this, we had local diffi culties and side issues to contend against, su in dent of themselves to destroy us. We lost votes In many places by reason of the legisla tion of lant session, and on the apprehension of negro BUllrnge; and in Philadelphia on theques tlon of cily taxation, and what Is known as the Bunday car question, and by sundry frauds. And worse thau all these, our friends there nominated a ticket for city olHcers not acceptable to our people, mainly because It had no soldiers upon it. The soldiers themselves, to their credit be It reoorded, Btood up manfully to their principles, and voted with us as hereto fore. Bui large numbers of their friends would not support the ticket; and in every Republican precinct in the city there were from fifteen to one hundred and fifty of our friends who re fused to vote. Thus we lost Philadelphia, aud consequently the btute. The defeat of so worthy a candidate as Henry TV SvilUams is a humiliation to which our r.ilmu .hr Rtiivfiil nt home should not have subjected us. They have been unfaithful to the meat principles for which we have struggled and sutlered together during the last six years, and they have imposed upon us additional labors and trials for the future, which a proper discbarge of duty now would have averted. n..t iJ niUiiMtr (IpKimirof the republic." Reconstruction, on the basis of universal liberty and impartial Justice, must yet be ac complished; aud there can be no doubt the Union Republican parly is as strong to-day on all great national issues, and as determined to accomplish Us mission, as at anytime during .1,0 lint nix vpnrs. Our dutv is plain, and is well stuted In a recent privato letter from our standard bearer in the late contest, as follows: "Instead of being dispirited, we should gird ir.itiB and buruisli our armor for next veer's Presidential contest, and make such use of this defeat as to secure a deolslve and over- 1. .1 , t twr vlnt.nrv " Many thanks to those who so nobly did their duty in me late cbuvhms uuu iu munn wuw ui not, the earnest hone Is Indulged that thoy will in 11 lie ample ameuua iiHie.tuci. liy order oj the Committee.
