The citizens of Annapolis are trying to obtain the removal of Commodore Porter, Superintendent of the Naval Academy. The Commodore, it appears, is too radical to suit them. On Ta 'sday evening an alTray ocourred in Norfolk, Va.. between Robert Dudley, of Bal timore, and John Fullerton, resulting in the latter being shot and dangerously wounded. Dudley was arrested, and claimed to have acted in self-defense. Mr. Fullerton is an old resident of Norfolk. Mr. J. They are writing notes at each other through the columns of the Alhe naum. Mr. Charles Wells, a member of the Lon don press, was the only man iu England out side of the Asiatic Society who could, or at any rate who did, address the Sultan in his own language, translating to him in Turkish an address from a deputation of the Foreign Affairs Committees and Friends of Turkey. A new journal has appeared In London devoted to the interests of Scotland and Scoth Dien. It is entitled The London Scotsman, a Weekly Journal of Anglo-Scottish News, and is published for four pence. Among its fea tures is a "Portrait Gallery of Eminent Scotch men," the first two papers of which are de voted to Thomas Carlyle. -Mr. Olphad Ilamet has lately published. under the title of "A Martyr to Bibliography," a sketch of the life and works of Joseph Marie Qui'rard, the greatest of French bibliographers, and one of the least fortunate of his class. Outside of the limited number of readers of bibliography for its own sake, only one of Qnerard's works succeeded in attracting much attention his "Supercherirts Litteraires De voirs" and that was chielly on account of a terrific attack on Alexandre Dumas. Mr. Dunlap Gay, of Boone county, Mo., has a mare on whose side was a lump about the size of a man's head. A short time since he concluded to have it opened, with a view to its removal, and asked Dr. F. C. Brown to perform the operation, which he did. The protuberance being opened, wa3 found to con tain four black snakes, about a foot long, all alive, and with white heads. This is a very singular "snake story," but as it is indorsed by the legally elected Representative in Con gress from the Ninth District, it ought to go to the country for what it is worth. With all deference to the new Bishop's theo logical attainments, it is a pity, we think, that he was not elected to the poetical posi tion he coveted, instead of Sir Francis fast ings Doyle. Professor Frankland has determined the illuminating quality of gas consumed in va rious towns in Britain, and the result shows, what has been long too well known to every resident in London, that the gas of the me tropolis is the worst in the kingdom. The Follies of Fashion. An English medi cal paper says: "The last freak of fashion li to cive the coup de qrdce to the pearl powder, white lead, and rouge that have so long reiened. Even belladonna is to be discarded, and 'golden' hair will Bhortly be as rare as the real auburn tint of nature, if not still rarer. The decree has cone forth for blank hair and bronze complexions, and these will, no doubt, shortly crowd the parks. How they are produced is the only question that need concern us. The destructive nature of the chemical agents usually employed for dyeing the hair black is well known. To give a lady of fashion the complexion of a eipsy nothing is needed but a little walnut juice, and we have reason to know that this has already found its way to the toilet table. It has at least the negative merit of not being so dangerous as some of the poisonous cosmetics that have preceded it. Whether a dirty face will long be the rage it would be rash to pre dict. On Saturday morning, about 2 o'clock, the re.-idence ot Mr. William J. Horst mantj, at Chelten Hills, was entered by burglars, who were somewhat disappointed, however, us they oiily secured some small pieces of silver aud plated ware aod some clothing. They were disturbed by Mr. Horstmann, who heard a noise in the house, and went to look alter it; other wise much more would have been taken, as the hou-e was eenerally ransacked. This is the third or fourth case ot attempted robbery in that immediate vicinity. If the burglars bad delayed their exit Irom the house a fevv moments later, they would have bad au opportunity to carry oil the contents of some or the firearms on the premises. The Sufferers. Each car is intended to bold tour hundred baskets, and there are re ceived from the Delaware road about oue huu dred and titty car loads daily, two-thiris -of which co directly to New York, and the balance are for dealers in this city. The conipauy have about two hundred peach cars constantly on the road, und as many more could be tilled at the present time. Fire.
