We repeat, on the whole, Miss lucclow's neoond volume more man Midi tne promise of her tlrnt. bhe now exhibits in ber work, as a rule, that decided Individuality wlili-h whs before nnnarpnt in her best ell or 18: and she still combines with her gifts ot Imagination and patbos a sweetness of moral imiuunce all tne more to oe prized be cause it seldom laue tne suape of direct homllY." The London Athenaeum wits the verv first journal , to recognize the senilis ol Jean Ingelow: it now no less emphatically recoenizes me aecinea advance oi ner genius as rnaailested In her new volume. The following Is a poem num iuc ucw uiuuic; roVK AT FIRST SIOHT. Tbo racing river leaped and sans Full blithely In tbe perfect weatber, All round the mountain echoes rail. ' In Prett by Kobrrtt Mrothere, o Bo , von. Ths Commerce of Egypt. The British Consul at Alexandria, Fgvpt, makes tome interesting statements in relation to the commerce of that port and the condition of the country. In 18U5 4263 vessel entered tbe port of Alexandria, and in tbe tea years from 1866 to 18G5 26,914 vessels arrived, giving an average of 2691 per year. In 1866 37u3 vesseiB were entered. British vessels in 1866 maintained their proportion ot the carrying trade to Alexandria. This has always been muck larger than that of any other nation; and although the number of Turkish and Egyptian ships considerably exceeds tbe Untiftb, the tonnage of the latter la much trreater, amount ing to nearly half the tonnage arriving from all nations. The development of the railways, and the in troduction of steam power for irrigation and cotton sins and pressure, have added largely to the coal required for the country; and tbo wealth of the people consequent on the profits derived from the cultivation of cotton has largely contributed to tbe general use of British manufactured goods among the rural popula tion. Bailways and cannls are being pushed forward with much vieor. In addition to the main lines from Alexandria to Cairo and Suez, various branches have been made la tbe inte rior to tbe large towns of Zagazig, Mehallatet Kebir, Mansurah, and very shortly the latter line will be completed northward to Damietta. A new line is also making to Suez. It will leave tbe main line at Benba, 30 miles from Cairo, will pass through Bulbles and Zagszlg, and follow the fresh water line to Suez'. The Viceroy is also constructing a line southward from Cairo. It is finished as lar as Benisonef, 70 miles, and will shortly be opened to Mmleh, 120 miles. It is said to be the intention of the Viceroy to carry it to Eehen, Bear Thebes, whence to Cossier, a port on the Red Sea, it ii 90 miles. To extend tbe line eventually to the ancient Berenin, and make it a port for mall steamers, is also said to be a plan of the Vice roy's. The telegraph is in opeiation to all tho towns and almost every village of importance in Lower .Egypt. Charles Dickens Sees at Vision. Mr. Dickens relates In All the Year Round the story ot a strange coincidence, having almost a supernatural cli aructer, w b Ion recen tly ooou rred to himself. It la contained in a note which he appends to an article by a contributor, who advances some new theories with regard to spectral appearances, and tells the famous stories of Lord liyttleton (with some additions not hitherto published), and of Lord Tyrone and Lady Beresford. Remarking on tbe latter, Mr. Dickens thinks that natural explanations are t-ufriclent; aud. Id Illustration of " tbe broad margin of allowance that must alwavs be lelt for coincidence in these oases," tells the following singular story :" We dreamed that we were in a large assembly, and aaw a lady In a bright red wrapper, whom we thought we knew. Her back bolng towards us. we touched ber. On looking round, she dis closed a face that was unknown to ns. and, on oar apologising, said, pleasantly, 'I am Miss N -, mentioning a name, not the name of any friend or acquaintance we Oiad, although a well-known name. The dream was unusually vivid, and we awoke. On the very next even ing we recognized (with a strange feeling), oom- inz in at tne opeu uoor oi our room, iuo iuj vi the dream, in tbe bright red wrapper. More wtrsordluary atlll, tbe lady was presented by thelriend who accompanied her, as Miss N , the name in tbe dream. No circumstance, near or remote, that we could ever traoe. In the least accounted for this. Tbe lady came on the real, commonplace visit, in pursuance of an ap nolntment quite unexpectedly made with tbe fcy who introduced her, only on the night of the oVeam. From tne latter we had no previous knowledge of her name.nor of her existence." FINANCIAL. RANKING HOUSE f or Jay Cooke & Co., I SOS. 113 AND 111 S.
