The evidence seemed to implicate the proprie tor, and he was bound over in the sum of $.ri00 ba'l to answer. As Mr. Garren had always maintained a character lor honesty, Officer Owens felt confident that he was not the thief, and commenced to work up the case. He and some others watched the two men closely. They saw them enter Uarrcn's pla -e attain, and Barnford go out into the yard and take a scat on the porch. A man was stationed at the alley fenoe, and saw Barnford reach up and take the pocket-book from the rafters of the shed. He reported it to Policeman Owens, who thereupon arrested him. As he was entering the Mayor's office heacknow lcdjied that he had tbe money. After a hearing he was held tu $1000 bail 10 appear at Court. A Kow ox tiie Fourth. At a place called Star's Grove, at the junction of Broadway and Kalghn's Point avenue, the colored people of tue vicinity held a pic-nic on the Fourth of July. Everything passed off pleasantly during the morning and early prt ot the afternoon. About 6 o'clock some white roughs originated a dis turbance by annojlng some ot the colored people. The tight soon became general, and legs, noses, ana heads surtered consideranly. John Kellev (white) ' received a dangerous wonnd Id the back from a razor. Mo arrests Reiemade. A Woman Ubaten. Last evening Officer Owen found a woman lying on the Ground near Scull's Spice Mills, drank. In close proximity to her was a man, who had hold of her arm. They were taken to the Station House, when It was discovered that the woman had been badly beaten, and it is 1 eared that her law is broken. The man stated that he was holding her to pre vent her lrom jumping overboard, When we consider that tbe parties were over two squares lrom the river Delaware, the story appears to be labulous. They were locked up for a hearing. 1 T . T..- V 1 3 - colored man named John Hazlet struck a mu latto womau, in consequence of a dispute they had had In reference to riding in the cars at Diamond Cottage. He was arrested, and while being taken to the Mayor'6 office attempted to pull something out of his pocket Officer Owen grabbed his hand and pulled it outot his pocket suddenly, and with it came a razor. John was held to answer. Woman Assaulted. A woman named Re becca Gibbs was struck bv a shovel in the hands of a yonnir man named William Graham Quls? Vr. He was arrested and bwund over. He bad Rebecca bound over also, he allcgine that she struck him with a brick previous to his admin istering the blow. Latino op a Corner-stone. The corner stone of the Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church will be laid with appropriate exercises on Tuesday, the 0th instant, at 4 o'clock P. M. Addresses will be made bv Bishop Simpson, Rev. C. A special term of the Court of Oyer and Terminer lor Cimden county will be commenced on the 23d ol the present month, for the purpose of hearine the new trial granted to Kelso, convicted ol killing William Kelly last term. The Fourth of July. The "Fourth" was a very quiet day in Camden, me majority of the citizens visiting Philadelphia aud the country. A number of arrests were made for drunkenness. A few indulged in firing off pistols, cannon, etc. Pardoned. George W. Haines, who was convicted of bigamy at the January term of the Camden County Court, and f entenced to the Btate Prison, was pardoned at the last session of the Court ot anions. Akrebts for Bathino. The corner-stone of the Oxford Presbyte rian Church edifice will be laid, with ap proprlate ceremonies, on Monday, the 8th oay of July, 1867, at i o'clock in the after noon. Tbe external dimensions of the building will be 85 feet front on Broad street, by 120 feet on Oxford street. Height of the centre gable, 85 leet; height of tower and spire, 170 feet to the . toD of the balL the nave, or audience room, will be 65 feet wide, 60 leet high to the centre ot tuearcnea ceiling; 85 feet long from the vestibule to the fiulpit; end with the organ gallery," it is calcu ated to comfortably seat one thousand persons; the organ eallery to be 14 leet above the main Moor, and the organ ion do teet man. The materials adopted are the Trenton brown stone for the ruoble walls of the Hanks and rear, having the dressings, buttress caps, copings, moulded work, etc, all executed in Connecti cut brown-stone, except the Broad "street en trances and window dressings, which will be rubbed drab-stone. The estimated cost of the ediflce Is $02,000. It is to be under roof before winter sets in, and is expected to be ready for occupancy in about eighteen months. A brown stone chapel, 40 feet front on Oxford street, by 80 leet deep, has already been erected, at a cost ol $'20,000, and is in use for public wor ship and the sabbath. School. The lot is 69 leet frcnt on Broad street, and extends along Oxford street 237 leet to Park avenue, on which latter street it also has a Irontaue of 99 leet; leaving an unoccupied space on Oxlord street and Park avenue of 77 by 09 leet, on which it is proposed to erect, at an early day, a separate Sabbath School building. k Police Appointments. Th Special Committee an ointed by Common Council to inquire and lnxesiiffate whether William J. Ovens, one of the assessors of the Seventh Ward, has not been giiihy of a pros violation of the duties ol his office, and whether the requirements of the law aiid ordinances governing the assessors have not been violated and disregarded by that officer, and whether his official conduct on the, occasion ol the late brutal murder ol Colonel Riddle has not been suoh as to warrant an im peachment by these Councils, and if the Com mittee deemed thoevldence sufficient, they were instructed to report articles of impeachment to the chamber, met last evening in the Select Council chamber. Messrs. Evans, Harper, 8hocmaker, Littleton, and Ileizoll, the Committee, were present. Messrs. John Riddle, henry Hubn, and several other wttnesf es were examined. The testimony wss similar to that adduced before Coroner Daniels and Alderman Beitler. The cae was not finished, and tbe Committee adjourned to meet this afternoon. Accidents. William Alcorn, aged thirty one residing in Filbert stTcet, above Twen tieth, a member of the Good-Will Steam Fire Company, icll off a ladder while engaged at the tre at Broad and Race streets, breaking his arm and injuring himself severely about the head. He was taken to the Pennsylvania Hos- puai. John W. bbultz. aped twentv-seven vears. living at Eighteenth and Market streets, was struck cn the head with a brick and badly injured on Thursday. He was conveyed to the Pennsylvania Hospital. Artoine metier, a member of the Hand-in- II and Steam Engine Com nan v. was badlv injured on the Fourth by the apparatus running against him and knocking him down. He was removed to his home, where his injuries were aitenuea to. At the same time Edward Buckley, the engi neer, and J. D. Cuip, a member, were also severely injured. Narrow Escape. Among the many narrow escapes lrom lire on the Fourth of July, was that ol tne dwelling ot nr. w. J. A. turkey, N. 242 South Kigbth street. A sky rocket, the shart ol which was six feet in length, entered the bouse through the third-story front window, and set fire to the beading; fortunately it was extinguished before much damage had been done. The velocity of the rocket was so great that the shaft was broken by the lorce of striking. Tiik Subscriptions to the shares of the Washington Library Company are being taken so rapidly that the Managers think the distri bution will positively take place In September.
