G From the JVew York Evening roit. Y Aaclcnt Ballad of jre Stockbroker. CANTO I. J, Introducing V Stockbroker to ye Header his notice. It n ye swellie Stockbroker, A Inllle rnftn is he; ... Ye sweet lis nana weed he gmokcu, And driukes right rnerrllle. UShming hmv he liveth on ye fat of ye land. pelmonlco hi reatanrant This mlRhty man knowrs won. And many a bake of ye sodden cake To lilm for gold doth sell. III. And how he grindeth ye face of yc poor. On utoolon Mull his elerkles ply The quill and alinae ye Inke, Bnt little recks he of their mlHPrie, . Hot doth of their travail Ithnke. IV. Ye Broker hi menialt. He iilteth In his oiTyce dcrke, And hlrelyngs to hym brlngo Newps of ye fstockbroker his Hoard, And talus of their dealinge. V. -Showing how, puffed up by hit own en1; . Voeth forth to the purlieus of ye Mm'n Ught,'ousness-yi Stoek Exchange-there to specu late in ye alipperie stocks. And whrn ye pnnninf?e wleht, he thinks, Ye little "point" he knowes, Unto ye Stockbroker his Hoard full warilie he goes. VI And showinq hoto cruelly he is deceived 6.1 Resuming counsellors, who make a butt and tool of ye broker. Full oft ye "point" to hym will provo A hollow mookerio, , He soils yestock and finds he 8 "sold," And a pauper forth goes he. VII. Ye Broker hit ways and means. Thpn comes ye verdant Customer ADd tells his shekels o'er; Sure as you live, my wordos I give. He sees them never more. XIHShmcing how yc speculator throws his bread on ye troubled waters of yc Fool, and how U re ittrneth net to him again. For well ye broker loves to make Of tbetr fat purso ye "I'ool," Wherein who will his moneye throw, Ccrlcs, he is a fool. IX. And how ye Broker givcth account ofyespecu lator lis missinge "margins." And of ye dreadful "Corner" then To hym ye Uroker blowes, When If ye wretch be "short" 0 stocks', Quick to the wall he goes. CANTO II. 1. Shotting ye lamentable factions into which yc foolish Stockbrokers arc divided by great gain and luxurie. Now listen ye to the mimic fight Wherein wltn clamorous rage, To make ye "tnrn" and moneye earn, Ye Brokers they engage. ll.IIighl ye Bulls and yc Bean. In mutual strife this noisle crew These bestial titles own 'Yclept ye "Jiulls," wbo'd put stock up. Ye "Bears," who pull them down. Jll. Showing how ye Bear doth love calamity and tniserie, and how he feedeth on ye country its woe. Ifow, when ye "Hear" wots of ye War, This knave he chuckleth well ; And miserie well loveth he, For then Is time to sell, IV. Showing how ye Bull ofttimes gets spanked. For on ye " Panic" thrive ye Hears They strive, this grleslcy pack, By piling up the wnsheii sales To break ye Bull his back. V. Feeling of ye Bull, and how, when tlicre is naught to fear, he waxeth bold. Ye Bull he feedeth on the hope Of better d;ys to come; And whou richesse doth people bless. I wot his gal ues are some, V5. And how ye Hear is sometimes cruelly baitaxt For then In gentle courtesy Ye Bulls, full bold, propose To make of stocks ye little ring, To twist ye Bear his nose. CANTO III. 1. Showing how tlicre in tribulation and calamities to ye Sl'ckbroker. jNnytheless his share of anguish sore This foxie childe hath hee, That wrings ye Stockbroker his herte, And causes miserie. II. And ye lamentation therefor. For much he feares ye "tight market" When moneye there is none: When all ye street In grief doe meet, And waken plteoi sinone. III. Ye Broker hie foe. And, woe ! this jollie Flnunceer ile hath an euemie, "Who by foul stealth purloins his wealth 1'o.rde, a wretch is he! IV. Showing ye idles of ye godless Impecunious knave ye Street Operator. It Is ye miscreant "Curb Stone Man" Who on ye street doth stay; Who buys ye Stockbroker his stocks, Then "busts" and cannot pay 1 CANTO IV, KT UTiT. Holding up to Envy ye Stockbroker his lot. Now who'd not bee ye Stockbroker, And live in Jollie I-'aBe, To play with other men their meanes, And their fat pockets squeeze? EVENING PARTIES. From Tliackeray's "Early and Bate Papers," in press by Ticknor fc Fields. But evening parties 1 0 milk and water. Lread and butter I No, no, the age is wiser I ine maniy youtn irequents his Club for com mon society; has a small circle of amiable ladies for friendly intercourse, his book and liis pipe always. No, madam, if I want to hear a song sun I will pay eight and sixpence and listen to Tain ourini and l'ersiaui. I will not pay, gloves, three-and-six; cab, there and back, four shil' lings; silk stockings every now and then, say a shilling a time; I will not pay to hear Miss iludge screech such disgusting twaddle as the above. If 1 want to see danuug, there is Ta" lioni for my money; or across the water, Mrs. JSerle and her forty pupils; or at Covent Gar den, Madame Nedy, beautiful as a houri, dark eyed and agile as a gazelle. I can see all those in comfort, and they dance a great deal better than Miss Blogg and Captain llaggerty, the great red-whiskered monster, who always wears nankeens because he thinka his legs are fine. If I want conversation, what has Misa Flock to say to me, forsooth, between the figures of a cursed quadrille that we are all ?;ravely dancing ? By heavens, what an agony t is 1 Look at the he-dancers, they seem op pressed with dreadful care. Look at the cava lier seul I if the operation lasted long, the man's hair would turn white, he would go mad I And is it for this that men and women assemble in multitudes, for this sorry pas time f No ! dance as you will, Miss Smith, and swim through the quadrille like a swan, and flutter through the galope like a sylphlde, and have the most elegant fresh toilets, the inoit brilliantly polished white shoulders, the ilandest eyes, the reddest, simperingest mouth, the whitest neck, the in fact, I say, be as charming as you will, that is not the place to which, if you are worth anything, you are most charming. You are beautiful; you are very much dt'cullcte'e; your eyes are always glancing down at a pretty pearl necklace, round a pearly neck, or a fresh, fragrant bou quet, stuckfiddlestick ! What is that the men admire in you f the animal, Mi-ia, the white, plump, external Smith, which men with their eye-glasses, standing at various parts ot the room, are scanning pertly and curiou-ily, and of which they are speaking brutally. A prutt admiration, truly! Unt its it possible that these men can admire anything else in you who have so much that id really admira- THE DAILY EVENING TELEGIIAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, We t Kidwlnter, who dances two sets of qnad rllles with you, whispers to j on, "Do yon rwpfer thtwawbery lthe or wathbofy itho f" and asks the name of that "gweat, enawmuth fat woman in wed natin and bird of pawadith?" to which yon reply, "Law, sir, It's mammal" The rest of the evening passes away In con vocation similarly edifying. What can any of the men admire in you, you silly little creature, liut the animal ? . The system of evening parties, then, Is & false and absurd one. Ladies may frequent them professionally with an eye to a husband, but a man in an ass who takes a wife out of Burh assemblies, having no other means of Judging of the object of his choice. You are not the same person in your white crape and satin slip as you are in your morning dress. A man is not the same in his tight coat and fever ish glazed rumps, and stiff white waistcoat, as he is In Lis green, double-breasted frook, liia old black ditto, or Lis woollen jacket. A man is doubly an ass who is in the habit of frequenting evening parties, un less lie is forced thither in search of a lady to whom he is attached, or unless he is compelled to go by hia wife. A man who loves dancing may be set down to be an ass; and the fashion is greatly going out with the increasing good senne of the age. Do not say that he who lives at home, or frequents clubs in lieu of balls, is a brute, and has not a proper respect for the female sex; on the con trary, be may respect it most sincerely, lie feels that a woman appears to mest advantage, not among those whom she cannot care about, but among those whom she loves. Ho thinks her Iwautiful when she is at home making tea for her old father. He believes her to be rh.irmincr when she is sincincr a fiimnln qnntr o - - - 0 o i " r at her piano, but not when she is screeching at an e ruing party, jio uhiiks by lar tne most valuable part of her is her heart; and a kind, simple heart, my dear, shines in conver sion butter than the best of wit. He admires linr lioaf in her Intercourse with linr familir -and her friends, and detests the miserable, twaddling snpsop inai no is obliged to hear frnrn hthI utter to hvr in the eonrsn of a bull! and avoids and dopises such meetings. A BEAUTIFUL PHENOMENON. At the last meeting of the California Academy ol Science, It. E. C. Stearns read a paper de scribing a fine exhibition of parhelia which he witnessed in this city, on the 17th of April, about 6 o'clock P. M., and giving a general reference t similar exhibitions elsewhere. We make the subjoined extracts : The f ky in the west, at the time, was some what cloudy and the atmosphere hazv. I was unable to ootain the exact position of the sun, out its anuuuc was approximately Ti aeg. above the horizon ; the diameter of the circle or halo was about ll ace, a horizontal line, drawn through the sun, and projected in a northerly and southerly direction to intersect the halo. rJJ.'-plajcd at each point of Intersection a parhe lion, or mock sun, of very con-iderable bril liancy, and continued for upwards of half an nour. a mucn more extensive display 01 these phenomena was witnessed by me tn the month of Apul, 18GG, while residing near Boston. Miss. Toe Pun was not lar trom the zenith, sur rounded by a single broad halo, which latter was in turn enclosed by an outer circle of manv halo?, all intersecting wb each other rnd wita the central halo: each n'f tha f '".ATspr.tion cemrued with a narheiion. So exter.slve was the display, owing to the number of holos and the attendant parhelia, that the whole heavens, irom the zenith to within appa- renily30 depiees of the horizon, seemed cov ered with brilliant circles or rings and resplen dent with numberless suns. The sky at the time was obscured -by a haze of considerable difficulty, and a chilling wind was blowing from the south. As it mtyht not be uninteresting to the Aca demy, I have made a few notes from booksjat my coromana, in reierence 10 tms ciass 01 at mospheric phenomena: "The fimpiesi lorm 01 a naio is mac 01 a white concentric ring surrounding the sun or moon, occasioned by very thin vapor diffused through the atmosphere, or minute particles of ice and 6now deflecting the rays of light. Double rings are occasionally seen displaying the brightest hues of the rainbow. The colored ring is produced by globales of visible vapor, the resulting halo exhibiting a character of density, and appearing contiguous to the lumi nous body according as the atmosphere is sur charged with humidity; hence a dene halo close to the moon is universally and justly regarded as an indication of coming rain. It bai been stated, as an approximation, that the globules which occasion the apnearauce of colored circles vary from the five-thousandth to the fifty-thousandth part of an inch in dia meter. "In the northern regions solar and lunar halos are very common, owing to the abundance of minute and hicrlily crystallized spicula of ice floating in the atmosphere. "faihtlia pro due to tbe same cause as halos which appear in connection with them. Luminous circles, or segments crossing one another, produce conspicuous masses of light by their united Intensities, and the points of intersection appear studded with the solar imaee; a frequent spectacle in Arctic enmes. in a less enngntened age the exhibi tions of these phenomena created great con sternation." Matthew Paris relates in 1m history: "A won derful sight was teen in KnglanJ A. D. 1233, April 8, in the fifth jear of the lelgn of Henry III, 8i:d lasted trom sunrise till noon. "At the same time, on the 8th of April, about 1 o'clock, in the borders of Herefordshire and Woicpsteishiie, besides the true suu there ap peared in the sky four mock suns of a red color, also a certain larere c'.rcle of the color of cry .tal. about two leet bread, which encompassed all EiiL'lutd, as it were." Furaieleiue, or mock moons, depending upon the causes which produce the solar image, on several examples ol it , lrequently adorn the Arctic sky . tan Francisco Bul'etin. A Royal Christening. The infant son of the Princess Christian (Princess Helena of Great Britain and Ireland) was christened at V mdsor Castle the other day with great cere mony, receiving the names of Christian Victor Albert Ludwig Lrn est Anton. At the begin ning of the service the following hymn, com posed i,y the late Prince Consort, was sung: "In life's Kuy morn, ore spriuhtly youth l.y vice und folly is enslaved, .ui, limy iiiy Maker's glorious name lie on thy InUul miud engraved.
