AMUSEMENTS. onw B.Ooron at tuk ACADKMY.-There Js Is received with more enthusiastic favor by the people than the eminent temperance champion, John B. Gough, Esq., who Is to lecture at the Academy of Music, under the auspices ot the Young Men's Christian Association, onThurs ,?.el,,?S' thS. m liia'ant-subjeot.V'Curl. ject "llRblt "U Monduy evening, May 13-sub- e. are ,erta,n that the announcement of Curiosity" for Thursday evening will be suffi cient to sell all the tickets the ilrst dny This lecture was delivered In Philadelphia for the nrst tlino In October last, and was pronounoed by those who heard it Mr. Oough's heist. Since then he has entirely revised It, and it Is now Said to bo the most humorous of all Mr. Gough's lectures. Bee special notices. "The Crown Diamonds" was given with great effect by the mulling Opera Troupe at the Academy of Music last evening, to a large and fashionable audience. Ills being witnessed by another large audi ence at thematlnoe tins aiternoon. On Mon day evening Mr. Edward Sequin will receive a complimentary benefit, it stiould bo born eln jnirid that next week is the last week of the English Opera. Mbs. Landkr as "Elizauettt."- Mrs. Lander achieved a great triumph In Ilisturi's Elizabeth last night. The house was crowded with a most funhlouable audience, and the lady received flattering expressions of approval. Indeed, her performance last evening stamped her the most eminent actress on our singe. Mrs. Lauder is the equal of Adelaide Klstorl in the role of "Eliasabeth" in all but two points. Lander lacks the optimism of art and the magnifloeut wardrobe ot Klstorl. Lander is powerful, faith fu), effective, yet wants that artistic impresslve ness with which Klstorl holds us spoil-bound. We are glad to know that the lovers of hi ;b. dramatic art are to bo allowed to witness Mrs. J-anUer In her finest role that of "Elizabeth" during the coming week. Mr. James II. Taylor was really fine as "LsNex" only, we think, a little overstrained in the scene denouncing the Queen. Mr. Taylor 1 1) area the general applnu.se with Mrs. Lauder. Mr. J. B. Roberts, as "Lord Burleigh," played with his usual care and taste, and Mr. Waloot was good as "Lord Bacon." The rent of the artists acquitted themselves in an acceptable manner. CITY INTELLIGENCE. I K6B ADDITIONAL LOCAL ITEMS 8KB OUTSIDE PAOXS, Police Intelligence Highway Robbery. Lewis Mackenzie had a h'.-ariDg before Com mitting Magistrate Bcitler, at the Central Sta tion, jesterday afternoon. James Harvey Lentz testified that on Tuesday afternoon he wa6 in the public house of Mr. Patrick Louth, 8. W. corner el New Market and Caliowhlll streets, and that there be formed the acquaintance of the defendant; in the evening Mackenzie escorted witness down New Maiket street, and on tha way the prisoner was joined by another individual; witness noticed the defendant take his watch, while the other man removed his hat; about $15 in money was also taken; de lend ant eaueht witness around the neck, and aknokt choked him while taking the watch. Henry Bates, foreman of a shoe manufactory on Race street, testified that he saw Mackenzie have a watch, which he stated he gambled for; when the prisoner wss arrested the wife of the accused gave witness the watch, which ho handed over to the detective officers; Mr. Leutz identified the watch as his property. The arrest was made by Detectives Henderson and Webb. The prisoner was committed for trial. Caught Fiee. The Delaware River Agricul tural Chemical Works of Messrs. Baugh & Son, located on the wharf just above the old South wark Canal, in the First Ward, took fire in the bone-drying room about 7 o'clock last evening. When first discovered by the watchman, the flames could have been extinguished by the application of a bucket of water. There being nothing of the kind immediately handy, the Are spread rapidly, and the immense building, a wooden structure three hundred feet in length, was in great danuer of destruction. One of the workmen turned the steam into the drying-room, and lull had the effect of checking the progress of the flames. The Shinier Steam Engine was dragged by hand through the passage-way, in the lower part of the establishment, to the river, and drawing water therefrom, the flames were speedily sup pressed. The entire loss will probably reach $1000. Immense numbers of people proceeded to the ntighboibood, expecting to see an ex tensive conflagration. JCakeless Conductors. Some of the conduc tor on the city cars are getting almost reckless of the lives of their passengers. On Thursday Tiisht at a late hour, a lady, while stepping oil a car at Montgomery avenue, caught.her dresa on the step. The car started, and she was draeed about two leet. Fortuna'.ely she escaped un injured. ' ' The Result. On Monday last a prize-fight came off near Scranton, Pa., in which a man named Collins, olthis city, was one of the prin cipals. Twenty-seven rounds were fought, oc cupying one hour and tony minutes. Collins 'was so severely iniured that he died a short time after having reached this city. WE ARE SELLINO ' Men'sall-wool Cuss.
