It is universally conceded in Sweden th foremost rank, as the type of the aWeBt native genius. By reputa tion the work has long been familiar to the literary world, but until the appearanoo of the neat volume before us, we had no opportunity of becoming acquainted with its contents, fur ther than by a synopsis of its plot, which has long found a plave amid the tales of the Norsemen. Recently, the works of the great lyrist of the North, Ks.iis Yegner, have been brought within our reach, lib epic, "Axel," has been translated by Mrs. Marsh, wife of our Minister at Naples, and the elegant trans lation of the "Saga" now published will do much to make us familiar with, and give us a correct conception of, the style of Swodish literature. The translation of the poem is as nearly literal as possible. It is an epic composed of a series of lyrics strung together, each in a different metre, but the series forming a com plete and closely connected tale. The flexi bility of the writer's style is attested by the graceful ease with which he writes in forms of verse totally different. We notice no less than eleven distinct modes of versification, and in all of them he excels. The foundation of the story rests in one of the old Norse legends, which excel in deeds of daring and reckless adventure. It is thickly strewn with rich metaphors, and many of its passages are familiar, although we do not know the source. Thus, the following lines are well known to our readers: "For woman loves a manly deed, And beauty's praise ! valor's meed; The one Is suited for the other, As head and helmet matched together." "Frithiof s Saga" is a most welcome addition to our literature, and Messrs. Leypoldt & Holt deserve great credit for the class of foreign works with which they are enriching our libra ries. It is prefaced by a life of the author by Bayard Taylor. Silver Head. TJouule Kkceit. Comedies by Langston Osborne. New York: Doolady Philadelphia Ageuts: J. JU. Llppincott Co. The second volume of a series of dramatic compositions which are being published by Mr. Osborne, is the work containing "Silver Head" and "Double Deceit." We cannot but think that the author is a much better com poser of comedies than of the sublime tragedy at which he aimed in his first volume. Both of the present plays are tolerably well conceived and finely executed. They are in the usual blank verse style adapted to the stage, and are above mediocrity. But in say ing this we say all we can in their praise. They do not show a surpassing genius. We do not think that a new era in the drama is indicated by their appearance. They are efforts at which the author need not blush, but they cannot be awarded a prize for power nor yet for originality. Their chief merit consists in the exceeding care with which the proofs have been read. They are got up in the excellent style of Mr. Doolady. ff7TiANKRtiPT Laws of theTJnited States. with Notes and .Decisions. By Edwin James. ew York: Harper & Bros. Philadelphia Agents: J. B. Llppincott Ss Co. m The handsome edition of the recent Bank rupt laws, with such explanations and judicial decisions as have been made, which has been compiled by Mr. James, bids fair to be a stand ard work with all our lawyers. It is an authoritative essay on the subject of bank ruptcy, and, by copious references to British precedents, is likely to prove of value when the operations of the Commissioners get fully tinder way. It is eminently a book for the times, and meiits a large sale. The Old Patrooit. By James A. Maitland. T. B. Peterson & Brothers. "The Old Patroon" is an absorbing novel. It treats of vast property possessions under the grants of the Dutch, and the struggle for their ownership.' It is skilfully worked up, and the plot is well developed. It Is issued in the handsome style which has characterized the latest publications of the Messrs. Peterson, and will have a deservedly large salo. Wi have received from G. W. Pitcher, No. 808 Caesnut street, the last issue by Ticknor & Fiekls of the beautiful diamond edition of Dickens, which is "Nicholas Nickleby." It is published: in uniform style with its prede cessors.' Longfellow's Poems, issued in the same shape as the "Diamond Dickens." Mr. Pitcher, is the authorized a sent in this city for both of these cheap yet handsome publi cations. From the same agent we have received two of Loring's publications, "The Forlorn Hope," a novel of considerable interest, and the fif teenth edition of that most excellent of recent fictions, "Pique." The fact of its popularity is well attested; and the fourteenth edition having been exhausted, shows that its rare merits are well appreciated. T P. Rkklly sends us ".bitter Bell," an other of those excellent publications for chil dren which has of late been issued. It is a well-told tale, and is calculated to attract the attention of that class of young readers Jo whose taste Mr. Skelly is so industriously catering. . - . J - The fourth series of "Afternoon Lectures" contains seyeral papers of, considerable inte rest; one cn "The History of English Son nets." bv the Archlibshop of Dublin; another on "Matthew Arnold's poetry," by Dean Alex ander; and a third by J. K. Ingram, on "Ten nyson's Works.'' The lectures in question were delivered in the Theatre of tb Museum of Industry, Dubhu. THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAM. PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, APRIL 22, 1867.
