A Hornvn Footess for a Bride The Cincinnati Commercial relates the following: A few years Sffo, to the great satisfaction of the faithful, a poetess, the legitimate successor of Eliza Cook, began to sing her t weet songs In Greaf Salt Lake City. It was a Mies Carmicbacl, then but twenty, a true child of the Territory and of tde faith. l!ora a Mormon, she had always remained one. H r poems, which wero published in a collected form not long ago at San Francisco, attracted much attention on the Western slope, and were favorably mentioned by Eastern re Viewers. But it cauie to pass that a doctor, who bad served wiih a colored regiment during the 'War. and had been wuh A. J. Smith in hotly contested battles on the lied river of the South, and whose eirant inclination had led him to California, wandered to the chief city of Utah, and there met the blonde, delicate poetess. Himself cultivated, formed by expeneuce of "battle and travel, he naturally was attracted by this singiuir bird, this woman who contrasted bo decidedly with her Mormon Bisters. A mutual inclination ripened into love, and, since they knew that there could be no hope ot a happy union if they remained in Utah, she da terniined to fly with him. So, choosing a favora ble moment, the stole away with him, and they, pursuing their eastward journey, reached Chicago last Saturday, and on the following Sunday she, for the first lime in her life, en tered a Christian cburcb. On Sunday night she left with ber betrothed for this city; whence they proceed to the seaboard, where tbey will be married, after which they intend to proceed to California by tbb Isthmus. Uranier de Uassagnac in the Paris Jfaya with personal hostility to the EmpTor, because he had introduced his Ma jestj'swirne in the preface to his last crllec tion ot essays. To this M. Prevost Paraiol rejoins "You foreet that the iC'onstliution declares bis Majesty alone, and to the exclusion ol the Ministers, responsible for all the acts of the Government. I myself quoted in that same preface an official declaration of JU. Drouvn de Lhuys, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, fo the effect that it was the Emperor Who was to be looked on as accountable for the conduct of our toreien affairs. I have only followed that counsel, and I cannot compre hend why you. blame me for doing so. As to the speech delivered at Ham in 1819 by the President of the Republic, no one admires those noble words more than 1, and the illustrious author of that address would never have jeckoned me among his adversaries had he remained faithlul to them." A Kunaway Wife In 18G1 an English COUDle lived in comfortable quarters near Ual- larat, the man being possessed of teveral good mining shares. Un an evil day, however, a brother shareholder was introduced, and one fine evening the lady and the friend left the bouse and the district together. The mines in which the husband was interested having lately been worked out, he realized his little propeity, and hearing a great deal about the 3ippa Laud gold fields, determined to seek the new Eldorado, and landed a few weeks back in gale. Here he heard that he could buy a large hotel from a widow at a ridiculously small sum. He started to view the investment, when he was surprised to find that the widow was no other than his long-lost wife. The husband used re criminations, the wife tears, and at length she was forgiven, more especially as she had endured a long list of Bufferings at the hinds ot tier paramour, wno nau oeen removed oy 4 death. The hotel has not changed hands, but 1 ' tbehusbind has asserted his riahts by placing 5 Ms name over the door. Melbourne Ane. St-it- (ember h Singular Arrest. A tailor called Wimmer was iecently lounl murdered near Vienna, and his murderer, a hautboy player in the orchestra of i - the Harmonic Theatre, was arrested on Sunday ) ni?bt. A singular circumstance connected with ? this crime was the manner in which Marcher was arrested. Ou Sunday night he was in his place In the orchestra as usual, and played the music assigned him diligently. Meanwhile the police, who were upon his track, arrived at the theatre, and not wishing to make a public scan dal and interrupt the performance besides, they placed officers at the different outlets, and when Marcher issued from the orchestra after the last piece of music had come to an end, he was re ' ceived by a commissary and lour soldiers, who 'conveyed him to the Ilurcau de Police, where be confessed his crime. A work entitled "Scenes in French Monas teries," by Algernon Taylor, just published iu London, contains the following: "The writer has taken pains to ascertain tho statifctics of the religious orders comprised within the limits of modern l'aris. The results may be summed up in a few words. Of bro therhoods there are fifteen communities, and of sisterhoods forty-seven, making a total of sixty two conventual establishments, large and small. Full tifty-tive of the number are actively en gaged in external duties, consisting for the moit part of tuition or nursing the sick. The houses of men include a Dominican priory, a convent of Capuchin friars, another of Passionists, four houses of Jesuits, and several belonging to Oratorians, Lazarlsts, Sulpiclans, and other less well-known conirrenations. The torty-scven sisterhoods are divided among thirty distinct orders, some of them, therefore, possessing several establishments. Thus the ttmightly cloistered Carmelite nuns have as many as three convents, the Augustinians two, the nuns ot the Visitation also two, the Little Sisters of the Poor lour; bes.des whom the Domini canesses, Franciscans, nuns of the Sacre Caw, nnd many others, have one house apiece. "Some Paris streets appear to be particularly favored by religious fraternities. Trie Rue de Vauglraid, for exumple, seems half made up of convents. It accommodates Dominicans, Je suits, nuns of the Visitation, nuns of our Laly of Loretto, and two communities of 'Sisters of the Christian Schools.' The Hue du Sevres contains houses of Jesuits and Lazarlsts, and no le9 than lour nunneries. The Rue de Picpus, the Rue du Dac, and the Rue d'Kufcr oan lay claim to nearly, it not quite, a9 many conventual institutions as tho streets just named. It has been said that religion among the Parisians flourishes in an inverse ratio to the number of their monastic establishments. What truth there may be In the cynical halt of this propo sition, I am unable to 6ay ; but of the prosi):;rous condition of the religious orders in the French capital, there can be no question. "Prominent new buildings are constantly cropping up in dillerent quarters of the town, looking like a cross between a private house and a barrack. Too spacious for the one, they are barely big enough for the latter, though, better nnisbed than barracks would ordinarily be. On inquiry, you learn that the great squ ire pile of masonry before you has beeu lately erected for the nuns of the Sacre Cujur, or Ur sulines, or the contemplative Carmelites. So rapid, indeed, is the development of the monas tic system in Parii at the present moment, that the figures here given would probubly require, to ensure rigid accuracy, the addition of several fresh comniuuitU'3 since these statistics were compiled."
