THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH, PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 18G6. FINANCE AND COMMERCE. Office of thb Evening Telegraph, f Wednesday, Auauflt 15, 1H08. ( The Indications in monetary matters continue lo point to a prolongod ease. The national finances are working easily, and tbere is no pressing demand for money for any of tho regu lar channels of trade. The Secretary of tne Treasury will reduce the interest, if indeed he should not pay off his a "$ cout. currency de posits, on 10 days' notice, on or after Sep tember 1. These deposits amounted on l?t August to $0R,665,49. Ills 4 p cent, green back deposits to the different Clearing house banks ot New York, Boston, Philadel phia, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Chicago, amounted to $:0,000,000. These last he will not probably disturb. But his present currency balances in the Treasury, and the certainty that his Income taxes, aside from other internal and customs revenues, will be very large in August, will enable blm to pay off all other interest bcannir certificates of deposits. He cannot, on reasonable terms, command for payment any other currency obligations. The Compound Legal-tender notes are not to be had except at a premium on par value and the full accumulated Interest. The rates of interest on the street are gradually lowering, and call loans, in some in stances are made as low a 3 per cent. Gold opened this morning nt 150., and w as a fraction higher at 1 o'clock. For Additional City Intelligence see 1iird 1'age. True Carrying of Concealed Dkadly Weapons. There seems to be a constantly in creasing hiibit ol carrying, concealed dually weapons by our voung men. It is a practice that leads to mort' disturbances and more rioting than almost all other causes combined. Every day es we pick up the papers, we read of tho constant use of U rearms and knives. There is no ncei'ssity in a well-governed city tor any one carrying weapons, and when it is done it is generally for the very purpose ot getting into a difficulty. it tokos very tittle to induce a man to quarrel when he has means of deadly offense on hi person, and there are mauv excitable young men who, in a moment ot passion, would not hesitate to use thvm. There were several arrests made by the police authorities yester day for this practice. Harry lirown and Charles (joins were ar rested by the harbor police in Poplar street, arove Franf, for beinir drunk and having in their possession deadly weapons. Xnev were committed by Alderiuuu Becker in default of Soo ban. Leo Conner was also arrested about midnight In the neighborhood of Fourth and Arch streets, for tho same offense, and for acting in n very disorderly manner. He bad a henng before Alderman Godbou this morning, uud was held in the sum of $800 to answer. Tiik Cuangk in tue Wkathrr. The great chan&res in the condition of the atmo sphere and the differences of temperature, are the active causes ot a great deaf ot sickness in our mi. 1st. Couehs and colds are exceedinnlv fashionable. Persons cannot be too careful of themselves in these sudden changes. One day it is excessively warm, and the next, we think about our overcoats. Perhaps at no time was there such excellent order aud quiet in our city as there exists at present. Although the whole city is crowiled wita stran gers ot all kinds and deereea, the admirable rf gulnt'.ons of the 'authorities have been such that everything is kept m perfect order. The presence of the Convention, instead of irritating Ihe masses, has apparently had the effect ot (luietinar them down to the observance of law and order. Slight Fires.
