TLFIAPH fU'KCIAL CORREtJPOHDBNCaV LiK Citv, Minnesota, June 23, 1800. From whal 1 can re in travelling from Washington to jMlnnesola, and from extensive inquiry along the route, there is do reason to fear short cropt Of anything In the farming lino, unless in exceptional cases of winter wheat and rye. Crops are everywhere a little backward, but under the influence ot the recent rain are coining lorwnrd finely. In Minnesota everything looks lovely. Wheat brings two dollars a bushel, r nearly, at the liver towns, and lar'siera are training every nerve, or rather muscle, to break up as much new land as possible, and make their money while their great staple i in high demand. Instances are known where far mi are paid for byasinirle crop. Ever ox, horse, or mule is -warned for the breaking plough this year, and those who have no teams ol their own are paying in this section six and seven dollars n acre for turning the soJ un(,er- ' This town is situated on a line prairie along the went side ot Lake Pepin, sixty milc3 below St. Paul. The residence part is built up with handsome cottages, with ample grounds, well shaded with forest and fruit trees. There are several good holels one large and very fine one for a country town; and the place has become a favorite resort lor people from the East and South, who come hero to enjoy the delight of a Minnesota summer. And here let me correct an error ot expression, very common with those who write about Lake Pepin. It is fre quently called an "enlargement of the Mis sissippi river." ; You might as well call a man's fcody an enlargement of his neck. The river ulmply ruLB into it and out of it. Lake Pepin is a first-class country lake of Usalt, and is under no obligations to the Father of Waters for its existence. It is from three to five miles wide, and nearly thirty long, surrounded with high blnffs, some of which rise perpendicularly for three or lour hundred feet, and present a face Of bare sandsione columns, with green slopes on the summit, while others show a sloping forest from the water's edjje. There is not in America a more delightful lake than Lake Pepin, either for scenery, for boating, lor health ful ness of climate, or for fishing. The ba?s, wall eyed pike, pickerel, and moscalunge abound in its sky-tinted waters, and the speckled trout are found in its numerous tributaries. We have yet to try the trout here, but you might have seen us playing a few of the lake beauties the other day. Anchoring our skiff off the point in front of tho village one afternoon, we capturad twenty-eight game fish, consisting of white bass, Ohio salmen, yellow pike (the two last belonging to the pike perch family), and pickerel; also, throe cattish and two skip jacks, or hickory shad. The average weight was about two pounds, excluding the catfish, which was a uUeeii-pounder. We played the latter for half an liour with one slender tackle, and were finally compelled to round ashore, and lead him out upon the beach. We would be in tavor of calling ttie cat a game fish if he was not so stubborn in his resistance. You may rM him ever bo gently, but he will never give up, and come in. Deaf to reason, he must be killed by main force. Parboiled and baked, he is said to be a good fish for the table, but we want no more of them on our books. We fished with single sinews and email hooks, with minnow. As we did not use the fly, the '"scientific" sportsman w ill of course turn up his nose at us; but the sport was good enough for us. There is tost, enough uncertainty as to whether you will get another bite, and just enough proba bility that you will, to "balance the emotions;" and the fresh cooling breeze, and the boat gently rocking on the wave, fill one with a sense ol exquisite pleasure. And when the fish takes your hook and min nowwhen you feci the sudden tautening ol the line, and see it spin through tho water, as the pike or bass darts right or left, or dive to the lowest depths, or madly leaps into the air to sec what unheard-of enemy has got him now, or perhaps to get a square blow at your line wiih Lis tail, or the better to. shake the book from his mouth you can crowd into a few moments sport enough to. keep the mind healthy for a year just by the recollec tion of it, provided you always have a Crop of wild blood lu your veins, uncorruptcd "by city notions of fly fishing. We have no Objection to scientific sportsmen, as they cull themselves; their methods 'are, no doubt, very fine for those w ho have tinuvmoney, and oppor tunity to practise them; but if they do not quit writing down in their books those who gome times fish with a natural bait as "blockheads,' "pot fiehcrs," and "poachers," some of us will get after them by-and-by w'uU a sharp stick. If the last remark is considered at all severe "we will relieve it, and do Justice to the fly by adding that on the following day we stood well ,' out on the rocky point near Prescott, and cast the trout fly over the black bass, in swift water, capturing a baker's d07.cn in a couple of hours. Their weight was about three pounds each. Tiere are rocky shores along the upper Mlssls pl in every neighborhood, where there is fine bass fishing as one would wish, f one wants to see large fish, without killing , it is amusing to watch the bill-fish in Lake n. They weigh Irom ten to one hundred rcds, have a short, stout body, and a paddle Bd bill from ten inches to two feet Iobij, TUng out from the nose. Their favorite play 'ump straight out of water and stand on than- jg f0I an instaut, and then fall buck like stic, Upon their side. On a windy day they are alsseen darting from wave to wave around bnot Preston Lodwick.of blessej stcam- f-ar ,1lfu),' UBtd to amuse his lady pussen ,ers wniiiwaicbing the bill-fish jump up away n aavaii6 ot Vu ttearaer, as she plouhed 2' .i Lke Pl'tl. bJ myW that tney were v.,e rinKuMo eee hut boat was coming." 1 1.
