THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA,' 7EDNEStiAT, JUNE 20, I860.. THE 1ELIG3APJ COMPANIES. &a omelal Mami-it Iatereatlnr St a. llallea. A report, Just lali before the Postmaster General by Messrs. E. 6. Sandiord, J. II. Wade, and William Orton, the Presidents of the Amerl an, Western Union, and United States Telegraph Companies, gives an account of the gradual de velopment and experience of these three great concern, representing nearly the whole tele graph interest In the United States, full of In structive facts and figures showing the amount ot their capital; the cost of construction of their lines; the amount of business transacted, and the number of stockholders and persons em ployed; the amount ol their gross and net earn ings, and other valuable information. The conoolidat'oa of the telegraph companies to thus explained: "A events developed, ths Western Union Tele graph Company become interetited in extending its lines to tlie I'acitlc, a project long deemed im practicable, t hat also was accomplished bat no sooner was it bronght to successful completion, and the Atlantic and PsciQo board the daub of each other's waters, befote the companies which sere rally owned the lines between Now York and Buffalo, and between l'hilade phia and Pittsburg loundthat they stood between this groat Wetern enterprise and the national metropolis on the sea board. "They saw at once that the wire which reached Buffalo or Pittsburg from Han Praucisoo had its proper terminus only in Mow York. And although plodgcs were mado, eiroug as the capacities of lan guage could put into legal form, that theirjterntory won d be respected, yet with the clear necessity be fore them of reaching Western cities oy a single Hash fiom those ou the seaboard and irom too National Capital, the arrangements ero soon mailt by which all these interests were placed uiidor a common direction. Ano now, thus homogeneous and vigorous, it be comes possible, as under no other circumtunces could it have been, lor tins company to eni-r into terns vith the Governments ot Eur.ipe and Asia, t unite the two continen s bv lines covering three lourihsot tho area of the glo. The American company has followed a simi lar courso, stimulated thereunto by similar neoessi tics." The following figures are cla'med to represent the capital of toe several telegruph cotnpaulcs named. The enumeration includes all but a lew small companies in various Slates. The amounts given do not repre.eot the money actu ally invested, but the amounts of stock issued by tbe several companies: Capital. EXTENT OP TUB LINES. The length of wire owned by the Western Union Telegraph Company is no less than forty lour thousand, by tbe United States sixteen thousand, and by tbe American Telegraph Company thirty thousand miles. These figures disclose "the fact that the Western Union and United States Companies, although they repre sent together less than twice the number of miles ot wire owned by the American Company, they have stork out equal to just seven limes the capital ot the latter. Tho natural Inference is that the stock of the American Company rests on a tar more established basis than that of its great Western ally. It can be easily understood l'roru tbe figures what enormous fortunes the original owners of the Western Union must have realized out of Its excessive issue ot stock. RECEIPTS. The gross receipts of three companies in 18C5 were: United States Telegraph Company 55808,422 Western Union telegraph Company (after consolidation with tbe New York, At hanv and Bufla o and Atlantic and Oiiio ( omoanies) 1,314 211-41 American le.egrapli Company 1,437,627 21 The a vei age receipts during 1860, 'CI, '62, 'C3, '64, '65 were: Western Union !08 849 10 Ame loan 916,000 00 The expenses el 1HU5 were: United States $703,000 00 Western Union (not (riven). The cost of building lines varies according to locality, timber, method, nature of the ground, and the wires to be borne. A line irom New York to Washington should be of the best class, and would be represented bv tho following figures! 43 poles delivered t stations $161 25 129 arms, complete 129 00 48 holes, five feet oeep tO"ls, etc 30 00 Laboi handing, preparing, erecting, eto .... 25 00 (Six wires at 12o. pei ponnd 24 )00 Labor wiring, transportation, etc 80'UO Distributing poles 25 00 superintendence, etc 25 00 8665 25 240 miles at 666 25. Washington to N York.li9,00 The average cost of machinery, batteries, etc., for a first-class line oi six wires, with switches and all the usual conveniences, taking a six wire line from New York to Washiueton, and estimating an office tor every live miles as an average, would be $70 per mile. For a tingle wire over the same route the cost will exceed $119 per mile. The cost of maintenance, bv which is meant the ' ordinary repair of a six-wire line, as de scribed, with a putrol force such as is now em ployed between New York and Washington, would be ten per cent, per annum on tho origi nal cost of construction, or about $20,000 per annum. The actual cost of the repair and patrol of the American Company over the same route for 1865 was $56,100-61. Tbe cost ot reconstruction would be ten per cent, per annum on the original cost.
