THE DAILY EVENING TELKGRAril PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, MAY 20, I860. SATURDAY, MAT 28, 1806. Will the Presbyterian Church Stand True I Wi have heard within the last low days Chris tian gentlemen, men of known probity and up posed Intelligence, say, with the longest possible faces, that the difficulty at present agitating the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Cburch is contrary to the doctrines of the Gospel, and savors rather of the world, the flesh, and the devil, than of Christian charity. They desire peace at every hazard, and would rather have the cankering worm of treason hidden securely beneath an outward semblance of verdancy, than that the bough should be cut oil" and the whole tree purified and saved. Some states man haa said, "that whosoever sicrirtccs principles for peace deserve to lose both peace and principles;" and we, therefore, welcome th'! discussion at St. Louis as far preferable to the whited sepulchre which was erected by another denomination In our own city 'as fall. We mean no invidious comparison, but frankly say that the Issue had bptter be fought at once, and the test ot loyalty applied, rather than the Southern Synods ihouM return as a favor and lorgiveness on their part, and an exhibition of what a rare supplr of the milk of human kind ness exists In their bosoms. Let us rather have an open, bold, bitter quarrel than a decep tive peace, wherein oil and water are supposed to mingle, and loyalty and disloyalty unite on the basis of falsely called Christian charity. Holding these sentiments, therefore, we have read the debate at the General Assembly without any of the morbid terror which seems to have pervaded certain Christian minds. We are glad it has occurred, if there was any necessity tor it, and we are glad that the cause of freedom had such an able advocate as Dr. Thomas, of Dayton, Ohio. We will briefly state the facts which led to the discussion. The Synod of Louisville have elected as delegate to the General Conven tion a Dr. Stuart Robinson, late of Canada, a bitter, consistent, open, and unrepentant Rebel one who has always jrloried in his treason, and does so to-day. The Synod was largtly com posed of returned Rebel chaplains, uud by their union with the sympathizers defeated the Rev. Robert J. Breckinridge, uud adopted a series of tieasonable resolutions. Dr. Breckinridge, with all of the loyal minority in this synod, presented a protest against the reception of Dr. Robinson, and prayed lor the dissolution or reform ot the Louisville Synod. The protesters number one hundred and eleven ministers of Kentucky, and submit three propositions, of which we give the gist. They recommend the Church: First, to purify borsolt from the wldoly diffused poison ol the times, which, in a lorm nioro or less virulent, is oifl'utied tbroair i all the churches, and to do this, as renumbering tbat the discipline of the Cburch is ol uod, and is an audience ot mercy to backsliders. heeond. To hold out, and open wido, the arm ot her love to every child ol Otod in the Southern States who has been a victim aud not a willing par. taker ot the tins against liod, agaiust his Church, against their countr? .and against which Divine X'ro vidence lias tesiitied by such severe aud buoii righteous Judgments. Thiid. lo proceed at onco with a zeal proportioned to the urgency ot the case to redeem tlie solomu promise umuo by the lirst dmeral Assembly alter the schism, organized in 1861, tbat she would wholly d't-rteard lie existence, aud ns Ciod rnivht make hor, would strive to recover all tho might lose by it, aud to extend and to establish more and more through out the South the precious ayrtein or Divine truth unto the liberty aud into the power ot which God bad caded her by His praco. let the revenge we will ark ot dod be a double share in the work oi ' saving those who have cast us out as doubly vile. It was, on the other hand, contended that these mild and Christian resolutions were far too radical and bitter in tone; and Dr. Van Dyke, of Brooklyn, and Dr. Boahdman, of Philadelphia, . appear as leaders of the sympathizers, aud favor , Dr. Robinson and his treasonable declarations and certificate. Dr. Thomas opened the debate with a vigor ous, whole-souled, and loyal speech. He did not temporize with treason or treason's friends. We quote a portion of his speech, the reference to the calf being to Dr. Van Dvke and the self constituted martyr caucus:-r Sir, when the National Government finds a State organized in armed resistance to Its authority, does it tend KB scouts to search the portiolios ot boarding Fchuol missus to ascertain what nambv-pamby trea son they may have written to their country cousins? 1 ilin.k not, sir In this case, sir, we have a plum ai.d disliuct defiance, l'nepaperofmy friend, Dr. McLean, takes the bull by tne horns, and 1 mean no' disrespect, sir, when I say that, while we have the bull by i he hornB, we need not trouble ourselves about th bleating ol the call. (Laughter.) It is uittural, sir, that thov should sympathize in tho an gmthot the r sire (Hvnuwod laughter.) We have a plain work belore us. it is the settlement of this purticulur question between the Presbytery of Loms vi leand the ( etieral As-omo'y ot the Presbyterian Church ot the tuned (states, "Taking up the would-be martyrs, Van Dvke, Bkackkk, ANDkUSON & Co., Dr. Ihomas remarked that the ageot martyidom had, h ieared, lorevor paed away. JU arty rdom used to mean the cross of i t i nil, with his head downward; the boiling caldron oi fcT Joiin, and the iiko.but what does this martyr dom mean? it means a palatial mansion on Brook lyn Heights. It means a trip to Kurope. It means the fmi.fi of an "innumerable company ot angel," waving their cambric handkerchiels. (Great merri ment and sensation.) Mr, when 1 want wine, pit e mo the blond of the grii e, and not your cider ehniwpague. When the site ol martyidom comes, let it be murtyrd. m that means something und oos's something a martyrdom tbat, emptles a man's onurob, and does not till it a mariyrooiu that driven a man trom his pu. pit aud does not invite sympathizers. To this spirited address, Dr. Boaroman, of our own city, a gentleman whose pamphlet, issued in the darkest days of the war, threw au lmpu. tmionon his eympnthy with the Union cause, replied. His remarks have a lodal interest: ' Br Boahdman proceeded to say that he had talked With none ot those brethren, was not lu their coun cils, aud bad no intimation of their intention to present this oi auv oti.er paper. He referred io tho treat danger to which legislators are exposed iu limes of great public excitement. He might disguise it M he chofe, he might talk about liberty, and throw dust In the eyes of an audience who kept their eyes open in order to have the dust thrown in, but Pblladelphlans will ee hlsobcct, stripped of all rhetoric. It was a defense of, and an attempt to aid, the ioulsville Secession Synod. His effort, however, we predict, will prove futile. Tbe Church must purge herself of a' I those of her children who are Irienda to treason, and the sooner she shakes them off the better. A few vigorous blows, and the treasonable elpment will be subdued; if tolerated, it will mistake kindness for timidity, silence for assent, and rend the Chinch with its arrant doctrines of treachery. From all sedition, privy conspiracy, and rebel lion, good Lord deliver vs. Foreign News by the Saxonla.M The foreien news by the arrival ol the steamer this morning is finrnctBlly favorable. The panic in England has subsided, and no more falluies are reported. All kind of securities, however, are much depressed, owing partly to the panic and partly to the threatening aspect of affairs on the continent, where war Is considered more imminent than ever. The cholera has appeared at Liverpool. The English Government proposes to consolidate the reform, meaures now belore the House of Com mons into one bill. Affair on the continent are becoming more complicated than evei. A treaty is reported to have been entered into between Prussia and Italy, which of course look towards a unioa of thofe powers against Austria. Garibaldi take tho field at the head of the Italian volunteers. The Czar refuses to interfere iu the present complications- WANAMAKFR A BROWN, WANArAKKRllROW.
