'.Wiirm.iiiii . THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1866. V INTERESTING ITEMS. Thi Sciincb of MoviNa.-Colonel UUey, of the Racine Jovma .baUngbecn recently married, eot along bo well with that, that be concluded he would "move," or as military men would nay, change bis base. In a very readable article, describing tbo process, he speaks ot the art of Bloving: "At last everything was torn tip, dragged ont, and read? for transportation, ana hi te comes in another very dolioate operation in the rrt ot moving, wht.ro the transit ot yourgoods Is to be through the poo l Ions and aristocrallo portion of the o tr. Notwith standing tho things we have been notiolng, we have some Quite gaudy looking 'hings, but tho trouble Is to make the drayman understand that you want those lew gaody.articles put on in as conspicuous a nanner as possible, so tint they would cover up the trai-h and attraot the attention of those wha are curious about knowing what their noighbors have got. Bat a drayman has a particular propeusry lor putting all the old duds on the too though, we give l)ennis the praise of being a good careful hand to move, and willing to make as tow loads as possible. Be simp y laoks taste In making things show off to advaatage, and a Utile diner, tlon. Vor Instanco, we vcntiirod to go along np the street with one load, and about the worst looking one we had, and though we took the sidewalk and assumed an air of indiffer ence, as though we baa no interest in that load of trah, we were not to be let 08 o easily, tor somo one asked Dennis who he was moving. We were not near enouch to prevent bis answering, at the top of his voice, 'Gurnet Utloy, to be sure, editor of the Racine Journal, the best paper in the Statu and It's a line lot of things he has, too.' We aid not stop to scan the expression ot the crowd." A Careless Uotebnor. William M. Stone was elected Governor ot Iowa about two years apco, but having other business to attend to, or resi dence at Dee Moines not being pleasant, ho chose to remain at his own home. His private fecrctarv. Orwig bv name, did all the official business, belnir anthnlzed to sign the Cover- nor's namo. Ho signed and issued proclama tions appointing days tor thanksgiving and elec tions, general and special; he signed pardons, reprieves, and discharges Irom the penitentiary, and exercised the pardoning power where be "thought justice demanded it;" he signed tho certificates of Iowa's six Congressmen, upon which they now hold their seats in Congress; be signed death-warrants tnat sent criminals to tho gallows; bo appointed public officers and ap proved their bonds, and hid probably signed the name of the Governor to ninety-nine out of every hundred ofliciul papers that have needed Governor Stone's signature. In fact, it appears that "Governor" Orwig having done so much in behalf of Governor Stone, he thought he might as well do a little for himself. He, there fore, appropristed to his own use about thirty thousand dollars' worth of land warrants, and suspicion boing aroused that Governor Stone had been doing this thins, a committee ot the Lcgi'-lature investigated the facts, when the whole affair was made manifest. What is Anally to be done about it, is not yet determined. A Cumous Scbjh in Rome. Wo find the fol lowing in the Taris Steele: "Strangers being very numerous in Borne, on account ot the Holy Week, an attempt has been made to afford them some amusement. On a. t Sunday week an enormous tripod, surrounded by a large quantity of fagots, and guarded by eight gendarmes, was erected in the Piazza San Carlo, before the Church of that name, one of the most frequented parts of the Corso. Towards 6 o'clock one of the missionaries advanced, and trom tho top of a plattorm announced to the crowd that his crusade against wicked books had met with unexpected success. 'The unfortunate persons, deceived and seduced by the writings of Kenan, Proudhon, etc., have hastened to bring them to their confessors, and it has been resolved to burn the whole publicly.' At this moment the doors of the church opened, and, amid the noise of bells and the chants of the monks and penitents, the pile was lighted. The missionary seized a book, and threw it into the ' flames with a triumphant air. It was the Viede Jesus. Volume succeeded volume. Some hun dreds of romances were boon no more than emptv smoke, in the middle of which, from time to time, some lets of turpentine thrown in flared up to render the flame more brilliant. Some Bengal lights would have been better, but It ap pears that they bad been rejected as involving too great an expense." A New Mania in Paris. A Paris corres pondent writes that "anew sensation has taken possession of the inhabitants of Parti that of collecting the portraits ot great political crimi nals, murderers, etc. The photograph of Booth, the assassin of Lincoln, is obtaining a very large sale, especially among the women. The carte de visile of the man who is sup posed to have strangled .the President Poucet enoys also a very great success. . Another photograph much sought after is that of Philippe, the murderer of the Hue de la Ville l'Eveque. This criminal, whose trUl will pro bably take place in May, is accused of havine committed seventeen murders similar to the one he perpetuated in,tne Hue de la Ville l'Eveque, and which led to his arrest. Tne documents connected with this case already form a large volume of four hundred-pages. The prisoner seems to be so well aware of tho fate which awaits him that he has already attempted twice to commit suicide in his cell at the prison ot La Foice." Pleasant ip Tkue. The Rochester (N. Y.) Z7iion says: "There are millions of bushels of rotten wheat now lying in the storehouses of Chicago, to be shipped when navigation opens. This grain, in all stages of decomposition, will be put into vessels, sent to Buffalo, put into ele vators, thence taken in canal boats to all points where these cratt go, chiefly to New York, and thence it will be sent to New England. This wheat is wholly unfit to be eaten, and will breed cholera wherever it is allowed to go. Buffalo will be ravagecN by cholera if that Chicago wheat is stored and transferred there. Rochester, and all the cities on the canals will be liable to sutler it the boats are permitted to carry this grain. The canals will be, full of cholera from New York to Butlalo, if the boats carry this grain." Thk Bkitish National Debt Lightened. The London Times has a statement that in one year from this time the annual cost of the public debt of Great Britain will be-lightened by more than half a million sterling. This is in conse quence of the approaching termination of the annuity of 585.710 contracted in 1822, to be paid to the Bank of England tor forty-lour years, the lat halt-yearly portion of which will fall due in April, 1807. The expiring ol this annuity, com monly known as the "Dead Weight," will not in any way affect the accounts of the Bank, the requisite reserves having always been made to reinstate the principal amount. The Damage Assessgd. The commissioners appointed to assess the losses sustained by the people ot Chamberburg, Pa., by the Rebel inva sion, have finished their labors.
