It has turned more than 600 miles of coast trom being a horrid slave mart to the peaceful and honest pursuits of agriculture and commerce. More than 150 churches have been erected. About 200 schools are in operation: 20.000 children have been taueht in English, aud 20,000 persons have united with the churches. The following esti mate, founded upon the United States renins, las been made of the probable amount which it costs the individual members ot the different churches in this country to sustain thum : A Baptist or Methodist, $340; a Presbyterian, $0; Comrregutiounliat, J1U; a Komun Catholic, $11; an Episcopalian, $10; a Reformed Dutch, $21!; a Unitarian, $23. Methodist. Tho revival at Williamsport, Pa., lias resulted in additions to try several churches of over seven hundred conveno; ubout one-half of that number have united with tho thiee Methodist Episcopal churches of Williamsport. During the last mouth the New York im tian Advocate Has reported revivals to the lol loping larae extent: March 1, 4M0 conversions and accessions; March H, 4l!G7; March 1", 23:i;i; March 22, 2688; March 20, 1718. A Congreeatioual Church has been organized ot Webster, Mo., twelve miles from St. Louis. This is the twenty-second Congregational Church in Missouri. Baptist. A church of this denomination in Chicago has iust been dedicated. The cost is $200,0u0, and it is a magnificent edifice. When the dedication Sabbath dawned, $50,000 were to be secured, or the organ, tower, and bll, one or all, would be miseine, or unpaid for, if obtained. A collection of $53,000 was obtained during the two services of the day $17,000 in '.he morning and $0100 in the evening. An extensive revival is in progress in the First, Baptist Church of Baltimore. Nearly one hundred have been received for baptism, in cluding one Methodist Minister and one Epis copal." Reform hd Dutch. The Secretary of tho Board of Foreign Missions ot the Reformed Dutch Church states that "the financial year of the Board of Foreien Missions closes on the 30th of April. To conclude the year without debt, $27,000 are still needed." The reports from numerous churches of this denomination, embracing all parts of the country. indicate extraordinary and powerful revivals of religion. The additions to these churches within a lew weeks must be many thousand. The Presbytery of New York (O. S.) has passed an earnest appeal in favor of the sailors, and the new church opened for their benefit in Market street, late the Market Street Retormed Dutch Church. The Trustees of Lafayette College met at Easton, Pa., March 28, and organized a scientific course. Mr. A. Pardee, ot Hazleton, gave $100,000, and Mr. William Davidson, of Phila delphia, endow ed the chair ot Chemistry. Roman Catholic In the course of the pre sent ear a National Synod of all the Roman Cafho'lic Bishops of the United States is to be held. Aichbishop Spalding, of Baltimore, will preside. General Maury's report of the defense of Mobile narrates the eventful history of a torpedo boat as follows: It was built ot boiior iron, was about thirtv-flve feet Ion and was mauned by a crow of nine men, eight ot whom worked tno propeller by liaDd. the nimh steered the boat and regulated tier movements bolow tho surface ol the water.
