We have announced the death, at Boston, of Gen eral Both Williams, of the Adjutant-General's Do partnient of the army. It appears tliat he had boon 1)1 lor some time, and retired, on lurlough to the residence of his sister, Mrs. Charles A. Lambard, whore he died. General Williams was a native of Augusta, Maine where he was born in 1822 He was the son of Daniel W. Williams, of Augusta, and was the nephew of lion Keuel Williams, who represented his W'ato in Congress from 1837 to IS48. Jt was through his uncle that General Williams received his appoint ment as cadet at the Militnrv Academy at West Point, whicn ho entered In 1803, and where he graduated in lK-1'2, No. 23 in one of the largest classes which ever pawed West Point, and very many of whom hnve become distinguished. Among those of bis follow graduates wno became dis tinguished or notorious during tho lato wnr ere Generals John Newton, Gustavus V. Smith, Mansflula Lovell, Alex. P. Stewart, John Tope, It W. Johnson, Abncr Doubcday, Daniel H. Hill, N. J. T. Dana, Richard II. Ander son, Lafayette McLaws, Karl van Dorn, and James Longstreet. On his graduation Cadet Williams en tered the army as a Brevttt (Second Lieutenant of the 2d Artillery, and In the 1st Artillery in August, 1814. He was appoiniod aid-do-camp to Mamr General Patterson during the years 18i" and 1S48. Be was created Flist Lieutenant in March, 1817, and was breveted Captain tor gallant and meritori ous conduot in the battle of Cerro Gordo, hie ooui mlssion bearing date from April 18, 1847. From 18(30 to 1868 he held the position of Post Adjutant of the Military Academy at West Point, and In August, 1868, he was appointed Assistant Ad lutaut -General, with tho brevet rank of Captain. In March, TSofi, he was appointed a full captain, hold ing his psitton in the Adjutant General's Department, and rosined bis rank in the line. On 8d of August, 1861, he was appointed first major of the Adjutant General's Department, iiaving previously (May 11) been breveted to that rank. Ho was appointed As sistant Adjutant-General on the staff of General McClcllan, and on the 23d of Septi mber, W32, was created a brlpadior-gcneral of volunteers under the acts of Congress approved July 22 and 24, 1801. He thus became tbiet Adiu ant-General ol tho Potomac army, a position which he retained throughout all the changes of commanders which took placo in that army, and may be said to have been a necessity to them all. He carried the de'uils of that army in his head as the late Colonel flowers did those ot Grant's army. W illiams and Bowers were somewhat alike otherwise than In position. Bothjwere quiet, demure, methodical men: both eminently fi ted for tho high order and clerical duty which their position re quired, ana both truly modest ana unassuming. General Williams hold the full rank ot lieutenant colonel in the regular army, but had la'ely been breveted colonel and brigadier-general "for gallant and meritorious services during the war." He had long hold the volunteer rank of brjgadier-genoral. His brevet as maior general of volunteers dates from August 1, 18G4, but the lappolntmeiit was only con firmed within the present month. Atiacnoa to tne same department ol the army is Major Robert Wil ' liams, who lately married tho widow of Stephen A. Douglas, and with whom General Seth Williams must not be confounded. General Williams was a bachelor. lUe Rebel General Nteptsen Elliott, Jr., I stout ii Carolina. The Rebel "hero of Fort Sumter" has not long survived the fall ol that fortress, and has been buried by his trlends with such honors as will hardly be more than taid to that other hero of the same lor- tress who held and surrendered it without dishonor. Stephen Elliott was one of that numerous class of young men at tno voutn wno were at once mane ana ruined by the Rebellion, liut lor treason he might have lived long on the splendid Bcaulort plantation on which he was born only thirty-lour years ago night have lived unknown perhaps but honored. W hen the war began it found him a young, energetio and enterprising planter in ttcauiort uistrict, soura Carolina. A tew wteks aiter he had raised and eauinned a battery of bulit mlantrv. which be came known as the Beaufort artillery. His first military exploit of which we have any record was during tne Jerjei expouuion to nncaney isiimu ou AncuBt 21. 1862. General 1'emberton. who was then in command at Chuneston, gave Elliott command of the three batteries ol aitiliery which were to ac company the attacking force, which consulted of a regiment of iniuntrv and the three battenes men tioned. The attack wa made at night, on Company H, ot the 8d Aew Hampshire lulantry, and re sulted, oocoruing to Elliott's Btory, in the annihi lation of the company. He save this was done "ac cording to careiul estimate," a he, "wishing to avoid delay," returned to Cl.arleston immediately after the work was done. For this, which was his first action. General IVmborton recoinmouded him for promotion, and the Colonel ot the infantry form ing the attackiug force acknowledged himsell "in-. debted to Captain Stephen Elliott, who is a sailor as well as somior, etc. Shortly alter this affair Elliott was placed in com mand of Fort Sumter, and coutiuued to command its defenses during tho terrible bombardment to which it was suMectcd bv General Gillmore. He and his venerable uncle, Stephen Elliott, sr., appeared in the South Cutoiina Hoiue oi Ropresentutivon ou JSo- vcmber 8, 18ti6, and quietly took the jath to support the conKtitution ol the hiaic "ana ot tne uni'ei hta'cs." This turned the tide, and the meeting broke up in a row between the Uobt'ita and (I'Muhouy ructions ot the leuumu. I.re and Iila &imrm. . . . , . It has frequently been reprosented. by the friends and admirers ot Robert R, Lee, late an officer of the Bebel army, that, although a slave holder, his treatment of his chattels was lnvarl- bly kind and humane. The subjoined statement, taken from the lips of one of his former slaves, explains itself. Its publication will doubtless greatly enhance the reputation of this "ftrcat and pood mau" among the chivalry of the South and the Copperheads of the North: My name Is Wesley Nomst I was born a slave on the plantation of George W. I'arko Cuslis: alter the death ot Mr. Cuslis.
