John Gorman, a stable boss for the Market Street Passengsr Railway Com- Sany. lell dead on Saturday evenipg, at tbe epot of tbe Company TnE Lettuce. The Romans esteemel this vegetable a clearer ot the senses. Thev were anciently eaten at tbe conculsiou of tair sup pers, but in tbe time ot Don.it ian thev chanced this order, and strved theni with the first entrees ot their feasts. The wil 1 lettuce, as well as the cultivated, was used medicinally by tbe Romans; and Paladins, a Greek physician, notice their cnlturc in his treatise on fevers. We find no at tempt made to cultivate the lettnee in Kneland ontil tbe fourth year of Queen Elizabeth's reign. J.502; hut in 1507 Gerard fives an account of eight kinds of lettuce that were then eultivated in England. He says, "Lettuce makeih a plea sant sal lad, being eaten raw with vinegar, oil, and a little salt; but if it be boiled, it is soonr digested, and nourheth more." He adds, "It is terved in tbec days, and these countries, at the beginning of sapper, and eaten first before any ether meat; but, notwithstanding, it may now aid then be eaten at both those times to the health of tbe body; for, being taken before nieit, it doth many times stir up appetite; and eaten after supper, it keepeth away drunkenness, which cometh by the' wine; and that is by rea son that it elaietb. the vapors from rising up into the head." He says, "Lettuce cooleth a hot stomach, called the heart-burning," etc. Lamab's Punishment. The Macon (Georeia) Teienravh leariia from private sources that G. B. Lamar nas been sentenced to three years' ira- pruonment ana $ n.tiun tine lor cotton traaas, bribery, etc. The decision of the mditary com mission awaits the approval ot I'resiaent Jonn- son. Lamar was condemned, we believe, on evidence culled from some of his own letters The President ought not to pnrdon this person; he deserves tbe punishment to which the court has sentenced him. Americans in Havana. A letter from Havana dated the Sth instant, says that city is crowded with American visitors, and adds: Among tne arrivals at the Hotel Santa Inabel whioh, bv-the-by, seems to have become the American head quarters I bave noticed tbe nieee of ex-Presl dent Buchanan, late Miss Harriet Lane, now Mrs. H. K. Johnson, and R. Patterson Kane, of Philadelphia, brother of the celebrated Dr. Kane. CoVnel Dodd, who arrived at Lmvenworth from Fort Dodsa' a few days ago, writes that ic was reported that George Bent, a half-breed son ot one ol tbe uents ot tne mountains, naa Deen elected war chief of the Cbeyennes, Arrapahoes, and ether prairie tribes, and that he was pre raring to take the field against the whites, Notwithstanding his Anglo-Saxon blood. Bent is said to be a bitter enemy of tbe whites, and as be Is brave and daring, trouble may be e.v pee'ed on the plains. The Bocretary ot the Treasury, a short time ago, received irom an unknown source the sum ot five thousand dollars, which the anonymous writer Mated rightfully belonged to the tiovern merit. Since the letter inclosing the money was received, another communication has been sent to the Secretary from anoiher party, who claims to bave lost that amount, and asks it there is any possibility of the amount deposited being Identi cai with the money lost by mm. it wouia. therefore, be very desirable to have the un known depositor state in what manner ne re ceived this money. Tbe London Telegraph, alluding to Mr. Pea- body's new gilt to the poor ot Loudon, remarks: "We should be paying a bad compliment to the great American merchant if wo called his bene volence 'princely,' for no modern prince has efJected one-tenth of the pood that may reason ably be expected to result from Mr. 1'eabodys illustrious gift. Tbe gain to the community is all the gTeater becaune the giver has not scat tered bis bounty broadcast in the form ot iudit criminate largesse, aud because the aid that he vouchsafes has no tendency either to pamper the laziness of pauperism, or to pauperize the working poor."
