A gen tleman writing from St. Albans, Vt., says that the statement of the loss of the Misslsquoi Bank by the defalcation ol llubbcll (its absconding cahhier), the liability of its directors, etc., is in correct. He makes the following statement in regard to the matter: "The dedication of Hub bell, cashier, is less than one hundred thousand dollar". The directors are not liable for the whole debts ot the bnnk, but are liable, with tleir bail, tor all the circulation, which will no doubt be redeemed from the assets of the bank, as the assets are sutticicnt for that purpose, and consequently none of the directors will be ruined financially. . Mr. liubbell (lor ho never was judge llubbcll) is rot a. rich man, and may be financially ruined in consequence of being on his son's cashier's bond for twenty thousand dol lars, as Mr. Hubbcll's estate probably never amounted to more than twelve or Btteeu thou sand dollars. The case is bad enough without exaggeration." 1 Widows vs. Maidens. A Richmond naner says that young men are scarce in that city, and maidens and widows in search of husband's very plenty. Tilcadincr in behalf of the maidens, says: "We do not think, in view of tne priat scarcity ot men, that it is lair lor widows to marry a second time, until all the young maidens have secured husbands. The Legislature ought to attend to this matter, and protect the interests ol young ladies, lir with' out the aid of legal enactments the widows are sure to piny the crab frame. They will there' fore have to be restrained by the strong arm of the law, as was done in the early colonial his itory of Virginia, when the House of Bureesses DUKHtu iiu ui;i ui ira: iitv cuurucier luuicatuu. It was found that all the young men imported into the colony were at once caught by the widows, by superior wiles and strategeins, with out any chance being allowed to the modest and retiring young maidens; so the Leglflature took the mutter in hand, and w ill have to do so Ht?aiu.'i A J.
