An Elderly Lady Taken from the Water in an Unconscious Condition. Special Disputi li to th© Tim©©. Lebanon, February h A baptismal ceremony took place at Wendel's Church, near Pnlmj ra, vesterdav, which nearly resulted in the death of Mrs. Martin Bowman. Several pe"sous were to be baptized bv Rev. Mr. Hertzle. Mrs. Bow man, fifty-five years of age, who is an invalid, was the fist, and, as it proved, the only oue who was im mersed. She was unable to walk and was carried to Spring creek. The Rev. Mr. Hevtzel and two at tendants carried the woman i i a chair into tiie stream, and, accord ing to the regulations of the Ger man Raptish Church, immersed her three times. When she was brought out of tho water it was thought she was dead. Her husband and child ren, whe were present, were in great anguish. The body was wrapped in shawls and removed m an uncon scious condition to the house of a neighbor. After stimulants bad been administered and hot bricks applied, the woman regained con sciousness and is now improving. While at Bellefonle the ether Monday we looked in upon court for a few minutes. Nearly all day was taken up with what is known as the argument list. The principal cases disposed of effecting our c.anunui nity were the Aarousburg road and the Millheim Borough. This road had been desperately foughu by Lie citizens of Penn township, particu larly by those of Millheim, who had for "their counsel Messrs. Beaver £ Geplnut. Aaioosburg and Haines township, who wanted the road, had Messrs. Alexander A Bower. Senator Alexander wns in court himself aid made an able, and as the sequel proved, telling argument in favor of the road. The road was finally grained, ni.d we hope our Aarousburg neighbors will now lv completely happy. The next act of the court was to confirm the act ot the Grand Jury, erecting Millheim into a Borough. Counsri for the Borough were Beaver & Gephart and Alexander A Bower. For con testants, Jack L. Spangler. The liorough was granted without any trouble. We also learned that the court abolished and discontinued the In dependent School District, in Gregg township. This case was commenc ed more than a year ago, tire ye iple of the "District"' fight rag-desperate ly to maintain what they supposed belonged to them as a matter ot j right. The court however, was of a ; different opinion, and so the Inde pendent District, after an existence j of some eighteen years, must go un- j tier. Gregg township was repre- j scuted in this case by Messrs. Alex- ! under & Bower, and the district by ' Braver & G phart. Our young friends, the junior j members of the two well established i law linns, conducted these proceed- j ings, of course under the guidance j and advice of their seniors, Senator ! Alexander and Gen. Beavet. C'u? ; and BYs will sometimes undertake; "big things" themselves. They are j two rising stars in the legal profes- ! siou We wisli them all possible ' success. ADYICK GRID*. Next Tuesday will De the day for our atiuual township and borough elections and the nvw boroutfh of Milllieiiu will on that day make its j first choice tor officers as ti distinct I municipality. Full boards of Coun cil, School Directors and Auditors, as well as a number of minor offi ces are to be filled, and it behooves the citizens to make a good start by selecting g>od, competent men to fill the various places. It dtes not now matter much who was in favor of and who opposed the bor ough. As far as Use public nuutens ro wc are all in precisely the snine Ikx, and it is equally the interest of , all to see to it that our public af- \ fairs should be managed judiciously • and economically, and that can and will tie done only if men are elected j who care more for the public good 1 than for their own private gain. All township and borough offices should l>e posts of honor , and not -jdaces of profit, to which they have often been prostituted in late years. There is no good reason at till why .;nen should "make money"' out of ti township office : nor was it 'he case until within recent years. Officers should be paid a fair remuneration for time spent in the public service i find that is all. Much of what will now be done, and the manner in which it is done, will become precedent* for the fu ture. It is therefore of the utmost iuii>ortance that we begin right that we make a ptoper start, so that with good and efficient officers to manage our public affairs the > burdens of taxation may fall as lightly as possible m the people.
