A4O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 18, 2003 < f Franklin Hog Farm Manager (Continued from Page A2B) is written, has some limitations. Farmers who import manure, for example, are required to keep a nutrient balance sheet, but aren’t necessarily required to have a full nutrient management plan. “There is a little bit of a loop hole there because some farmers keep better track (of imported manure) than others,’’ he said. “On the other hand, just because they have a nutrient manage ment plan doesn’t mean they’re using it." Manure importer regulations are being revised for the new Nu trient Management Act. Tom Chiou of Taiwan owns Franklin Hog Farm, which em ploys 10 people in the farrow-to feeder operation. He also owns a hog finishing operation, Timber Ridge Farm, in Fulton County. Chiou had been a hog produc er in Taiwan, exporting much of his pork to Japan. Expansion took him to south central Penn sylvania in 1996. In 1997, foot-and-mouth dis ease in Taiwan curtailed pork ex ports. According to Sollenberger, the expansion here made sense for those reasons, and because Chiou had been importing about 90 per cent of his feed from the U.S. About 1,300 pigs a week are weaned on the 2,800-sow opera tion, and are moved to a “de tached nursery” barn where they are raised to feeder age. The nursery is separate from the far rowing bam and two gestation barns for health reasons. Gehl Offers New Choices WEST BEND, Wis. Gehl Company offers farmers addi tional material handling solutions with the introduction of new All-Wheel- Steer Loaders to their agricultural product line. Three models, avail able in either standard or telescopic boom configurations, offer a combination of power and versatiblity. The exclusive All- Wheel-Steer (AWS) design features un matched maneuvera bility and consistent load capacities throughout the steer ing cycle for maxi mum production. Be cause of their compact size and superior steer ing angles, the Gehl AWS Loaders operate better in confined spaces than articulat ed machines. Because the center-of-gravity remains the same dur ing the steering cycle, load capacities do not change while turning. Gehl’s AWS Load ers are built for power. Operating weights range from >9*480 ,to 16,500 pounds with These 6-day-old pigs like to lie on the heat pad pro vided in the farrowing crate. Franklin Hog Farm uses artifi cial insemination (AI), with semen collected from boars on the farm. All the AI work is done by employees. Replacement gilts are raised on the farm. Except for the occa sional new crop of boars being brought in, “it’s basically a closed herd,” Sollenberger said. The farm uses patented hog genetics that include Landrace/ Yorkshire sows, pure or cross bred Hampshire and/or Duroc boars, and Pietrain terminal sires. The 17th Annual Junior Dairy Management Contest was open to all 4-H, FFA members, and ag ricultural students at private high schools in the U.S. Contestants participated in a linear trait analysis class, placed a class of dairy cattle, identified retail meat cuts, dairy feeds and forages, and took a test on dairy bucket capacities from 1.1 to I.S cubic yards. Diesel engines are standard on all models.
