On Monday, Aug. 11, the featured event at the Rockingham Co. Fair was the Market Swine Show with an expected number of 4-H and FFA supporters attending the event. But attendance shot up fast when the rain descended in tor rents and like a scene from Noahs ark sopping fairgoers needing a dry place, immediately, overflowed the interconnected bams and show arena. By then, being sheltered with all manner of livestock species was prefera ble to open air fair attractions in a downpour that continued all evening. Caity Armentrout, 13, of Mount Crawford, heard the judge Dr. Cynthia Wood from Virginia Tech announce the supreme grand champion market hog was her own “Barney.” Armentrout said that when he came to their farm amongst a group of eight pigs, it turned out he was the only male. That’s why Barney seemed a good name for him-. “Out of eight pigs he was the only guy,” she said. Barney was also the shows heavyweight champion. A sophomore at the Spotswood High School, Secrist is Darius and Darlene Secrists daughter. Bradley Bennett, 13, showed the swine duo that took supreme grand champion honors in the Pair of Hogs show. He is the son of Barry and Debbie Bennett of Weyers Cave. The hog pairs reserve supreme grand champion went to Nathan Coffmans hogs. Coffman, 18, is a Grottoes resident and a freshman at the Blue Ridge Community College. His parents are Greg and Tammy Coffman. Some 118 hogs and 53 exhibi tors participated in the show. This boar had an average daily gain of 2.36 pounds per day and an adjusted loin eye area of 6.29 inches. The highest selling crossbred boar came from David A. Reinecker of York Springs, and the single Hamp shire boar came from Greg In nerst of Red Lion. The 10 gilts, consisting of 9 Yorkshire gilts and 1 Crossbred gilt, averaging $270 per head. The highest indexing gilt was owned by Wayne E. Brothers of Connelsville and sold for $3OO to Glenn F. Speer. The highest sell ing gilt was consigned by Henry Halloway of Darlington, Md., and sold to Neutzel Yorkshires for $425, The performance test evaluates growth, aver age daily gain, weight per day of age, and ul trasonically scanned loin eye and fat thickness scans. With this inform ation a producer and buyer can pick a boar or gilt, which contains growth and muscling characteristics which would be more beneficial to their operation. Fur thering these economi cally characteristics within the industry cre ates a better product to the consumer and a more profitable scenario for the producer. In addition to hogs, the PDA hosts perform ance tests for cattle, sheep, and goats.
