Herr joins the PennAg Industries Associa tion staff and brings with him a lifetime of agricultural experi ence. He was reared on his fami ly’s sheep farm in Lancaster County. While studying at Penn State for a B.S. in Agricultural Educa tion, Chris interned for former Secretary Samuel E. Hayes, then Minority Whip in the House of Representatives. After graduation, Herr went to work for the Pennsylvania De partment of Agriculture (PDA) as an administrative officer for the Bureau of Agricultural Devel opment. His career with the PDA lasted 18 years. Through the years, Chris moved from being the Director for the Bureau of Agricultural Development to being the Director of Policy, Planning, and Legislation. For the last eight years, he was Dep uty Secretary for Regulatory Pro grams. Herr’s duties as assistant vice president of the Poultry Council will include running the food booth at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show, hosting the PennAg Poultry Golf Outing each Octo ber, and orchestrating the Spring Poultry Banquet scheduled next year at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center, April 23, 2004. Farmland Board Preserves Acres HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) The Pennsylvania Farmland Preservation Board met Oct. 9 to review and approve a group of 21 farmland preservation easement applications tiom 12 counties. Agriculture Secretary Dennis C Wolff announced that the newly approved applicants would join more than 2,000 other producers in the commonwealth who had committed to keep their land in agriculture forever in exchange for a one-time purchase of develop ment rights. “Pennsylvania leads the nation in the number of acres preserved for future generations to enjoy an abundant supply of locally-produced food,” Wolff said. “With the board’s actions today, we have a total of 265,137 acres enrolled in the program since it began in 1989.” Wolff explained that the statewide program works in concert with county farmland preserva tion boards operating in a majority of Pennsylva nia counties. The county programs recommend in dividual farms to ensure the most effective use of program resources. “This is a team effort between state and local governments to ensure that Pennsylvania remains a leader in agriculture into the future.
