July 11,2003 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL SLAUGHTER CATTLE SUMMARY - Week Ending July U; Slaughter cattle market steady with last week. Trading in the corn belt followed a smooth marketing pattern for the week. Sales in Nebraska were substantial clear ing show lists by Thursday. Trade in the southern plains was stifled as sellers held their very current show lists for a raise in prices that has yet to materialize. Packers realizing strong margins but the dark cloud of the Canadian border question makes for more willing sellers. Cattle and beef supplies are growing burdensome in Canada and US sellers remain on the de fensive. Clearance of beef over the holiday weekend was good and boxed values re sponded halting the declines and turning to the positive side. Boxed beef prices closed Thursday at an average of 127.02 up 1.48 from last week's close. Sales of slaughter cattle on a national basis for ne gotiated cash trades were 162,200 through 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Last week’s full count was 217,700 head.
