It isn’t every day that there is an op portunity to own an original patent model for an object invented in the 19th century. And, at prices under a thousand dollars. Periodically one or two patent models will show up at auction. However, at the recent James Julia auction over a dozen were offered. The diversified items included a kiln for drying grain, an improved washing machine, (a wooden model patented 1867), and a double action pump. Collectors favor those that have some move ment. Americans were an inventive lot. So much so, that by 1907, the U.S. Patent Office didn’t have enough space to either store or display them all. Congress decided to sell them. The Smithsonian Institution got first choice, and the remainder were sold at auction in 1925. The first major private collection was begun by E. Tunnicliff Fox, who later do nated it to the Hagley Museum and library in Wilmington, Delaware, where it can be seen today.
