Patent Models
An Inventive Collectible
Looking for something different
to collect?
How about a patent model? It
isn’t every day that there is an op
portunity to own an original patent
model for an object invented in the
19th century. And, at prices under a
thousand dollars. Periodically one
or two patent models will show up
at auction. However, at the recent
James Julia auction over a dozen
were offered. The diversified items
included a kiln for drying grain, an
improved washing machine, (a
wooden model patented 1867), and
a double action pump. Collectors
favor those that have some move
ment.
Americans were an inventive lot.
So much so, that by 1907, the U.S.
Patent Office didn’t have enough
space to either store or display them
all. Congress decided to sell them.
The Smithsonian Institution got
first choice, and the remainder were
sold at auction in 1925. The first
major private collection was begun
by E. Tunnicliff Fox, who later do
nated it to the Hagley Museum and
library in Wilmington, Delaware,
where it can be seen today.

began when Congress passed the
Patent Act of 1790 to regulate the
process for people interested in get
ting a patent to protect their inven-

Very rare 1924 Moon 650 Speedster which won 1995 & 96 Jr. - Sr. and
Grand National Preservation awards, a magnificent automobile which quite
possibly is the only one of it’s model for sale in the world; 1926 4-door
Nash Sedan which also has won the same national awards in 1990-91-93-
94; 1925 Studebaker Phaeton with the California top; 1934 Ford 2-door
Sedan with Potter trank; 1949 Nash Brougham 600. These cars have all
been restored and are absolutely beautiful. We also have a 1938 Harley
Davidson 61 cu, inch Knucklehead with a side car in very very good
unrestored condition and 1975 Chevy Camera with 350 cu. in. engine with
2 four barrel carbs, 4-speed transmission; plus: 2 early gas pumps, one
“Guaranteed Liquid Measure Co., Rochester, PA”, and “Sky Chief Texaco”;
plus other car related items.
