Report Supplied By USDA Friday, June 27,2003 CATTLE CALVES THIS WEEK 2363 1796 LAST WEEK 2506 1648 LAST YEAR 1718 1596 NOTE: This report is last week’s market review which was not printed because of the early presstime. Compared to last week's closing prices, slaughter steers sold 1.00-2.00 lower on Monday and Tuesday, with the late week run trading mostly 1.00 higher. The quality of the run was below normal early in the week, with the cattle weighing up pretty good on Thursday due in part to the 90 degree temperatures; with an in crease in quality noted as well. The finished market in Lancaster County remains extremely good, as nice sets of high Choice and Prime steers will still bring in the low to mid-80‘s, with the bulk of the Choice steers are trading from 76.00- This is very impressive considering the finished market everywhere else in the U.S. is in the low 70‘s. Nationally, the Western direct feed yards moved their show lists steady to 1.00 lower at mostly 74.00 on a live basis Dressed sales in the Northern Plains were steady to 2.00 lower at mostly 117.00, with the dressed move ment in the Western Com belt reported fully 2.00- 3.00 lower from 116.00-117.00. Even though the Board posted some decent gains on Wednesday and Thursday which moved the July live cattle contract up to 71.65, it was still not enough to run the bears out of the market; especially when it is at around a 3.00 discount to the cash trade. Historically, this is the time of year when prices dip into summer lows as pack ers crank up their chains to meet the grilling de mand. Despite feed yards remaining very cur rent, it looks like this year will be no exception; especially with the major question that is now sewed into most cattlemen's minds, “when is the Canadian border going to open.” It has been quite a while since we have seen any upward movement in boxed beef values. It was only a short time ago that records were shattered as thd Choice cutout moved above 150.00. The current light and heavy Choice cutout is 132.31 and 132.60 respectively. Local Holstein steers sold steady to 1.00 higher for the week, with a fairly good run of slaughter heifers trending with a firmer undertone. Slaughter cows opened the week steady to 1.50 higher. However, after the boneless market moved sharply higher mid-week packers took note and added several dollars to their bids to fill their demands. Late week prices were fully 2.00-5.00 higher as the weatherman is forecasting nice summer weather for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, with packers running full shifts to grind as much as possible to meet the demand for hamburger. Slaughter bulls have drawn support from the cow market as prices were 4.00-9.00 higher for the week. The reported supply this week in Lancas ter County included 1001 head of slaugh ter steers, 124 head of slaughter heifers, 948 head of slaughter cows, 143 head of slaughter bulls, and 147 head of feeder cattle. Calf Summary: Compared to last week's clos ing prices, veal calves sold steady to 3.00 lower. Holstein bull calves suitable to go into special fed veal barns sold sharply higher to open the week. However, for the second week in a row the late week demand was very light as prices moved 10 00-40.00 lower. The baby calf market has been trading very sporadic over the past few weeks. It's no secret that producers are thrilled to be receiving up to 260.00 for their dressed calves. However, most are remaining very cau tious as they re-stock their bams, because most know prices could very well move sharply lower if the border were to open, although there is still no word of an opening. Holstein heifer calves moved sharply higher for the week as fancy heifers were as high as 510.00 by week's end. This week the PA Department of Agriculture graded 1150 head of heifers and bulls in Lan caster County, this is compared to 1057 the prior week.
