National Feeder Cattle Weekly Review St Joseph, Mo. Friday, June 13,2003 Report Supplied By USD A NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CATTLE SUMMARY - Week Ending June 13 Total Receipts; 358,000, last week 331,900; last year 305,200. Direct: 89,200, last week 97,800, last year 53,000. Video/Intemet: 33,400, last week 1,000, last year 39,000. Auctions: 235,400, last week 233,100, last year 213,200. This week’s reported auction volume included 46 percent over 600 lb and 44 percent heifers. Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower with the full extent of the weakness noted late in the week. Receipts were un usually large again this week as sellers rushed to take advantage of the hand some price levels. Many producers are marketing early and foregoing the extra weight gain, as they can’t foresee a better time to sell. Midwestern stockyards were swelling with numbers, as Oklahoma City and Joplin each marketed around 17,000 head this week. These areas have been de pleted of feeder cattle but many trucks came in from southeast of town, several hundred miles south and east that is. Shipped-in cattle with increased Brah man influence are helping to make-up Midwestern auction receipts and buyers are learning to like ’em to fill orders and cheapen-up their other purchases. For the past couple of months the beef sector has been happily clicking up the roller-coaster incline with record dressed beef values and near record feeder and fat cattle prices. This week the clicking stopped; boxed beef cut-outs lost ground and feedlots were forced to sell showlists 2.00 lower live at mostly 78.00 and 4.00 lower dressed at mostly 124.00. The spot June CME Live Cattle Futures have lost 3.40 since June 2nd and continue their trend of trading at a significant discount to cash and then racing back to the real market a few days before the contract matures. This scenario is actually work ing magnificently for cattle feeders with short hedges as they can pocket the nega tive basis. Futures traders continue to ignore the numerous bullish factors and instead are focusing on building plenty of negative cushion into the market for the anticipat edopening of the Canadian border to beef products. By the time the border actually opens the damage will have already been done, and if all goes well the market may be in for a boost. Expect feeder cattle re ceipts to taper off dramatically next week as the first signs of a southbound market came out in flashing neon.
