Purcell has been appointed CEO of Mid-Atlantic Dairy Asso ciation. Purcell, a 14-year veteran of the dairy promotion industry, most recently served as director of advertising and retail promo tions for Mid-Atlantic Dairy As sociation. She replaces Bret H. Rigby, who served as CEO for about five years before resigning recently to pursue other interests. As CEO, Purcell will oversee the local implementation of na tional advertising, communica tions, health professional, nutri tion education, school marketing and industry relations programs. She will serve as the liaison be tween Mid-Atlantic Dairy Associ ation and Dairy Management Inc., which manages the national dairy checkoff program. Purcell joined the Middle At lantic Milk Marketing Associa tion (MAMMA) as communica tions director in 1989. She served as interim general manager from 1996 to 1998 until MAMMA merged with the Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., Dairy Councils to form Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. The March 2003 U.S. pig crop at 8.32 million head, was 3 percent below the previous year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Sows farrowing during this period to taled 940 thousand head, 4 percent below last year. The average pigs per litter for March increased to 8.85, compared to 8.80 last year. The U.S. inventory of sows and gilts on April 1, 2003, was 5.80 million head, down 3 percent from April 1,2002.
