Report Supplied By USDA Friday, April 4,2003 CATTLE CALVES 2630 1432 2695 1595 2485 1371 THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold steady to .50 higher on the early week runs; 'With the late week supply trading hilly 1.00-2.00 higher. Even though many area producers are running low on feed, most of the cattle in Lan caster County are still showing some pretty good finish as the high Choice and Prime sup ply has increased over the past couple of weeks. The only decrease noticeable is the weights as most of the fats are weighing from 1100-1300 lbs, instead of the normal supply of heavier 1300-1495 pounders. Slaughter Holstein steers sold with a firmer undertone for the week on mixed runs Slaughter heifers also sold firmer, although the supply was not large. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower to kick off the week, with increased boneless beef values add ing some support late in the week as prices trended steady to 1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold near steady early in the week, with a heavy supply late in the week that included over 100 head trading with a firmer undertone. This week's reported supply in Lancaster County in cluded 40 percent steers (1046 head), 5 percent heifers (121 head), 39 percent cows (1037 head), 6 percent bulls (155 head), with the balance of the three sales made up of 271 head of feeder cattle. • Slaughter Steers; High Choice and Prime 2-4 1110-1465 lbs 78.50-82.85, 76.75-81.50 early in the week, Yield Grade 5 75.50-77.75. Calf Summary: Compared to last week, slaughter calves sold at the same prices quoted over the last several weeks. The only increase was late in the week where a few more buyers were interested in killing a few and therefore put a little push in the market. Holstein bull calves going into special-fed veal barns sold sharply lower early in the week, with late week prices trading sharply higher. The bull calf mar ket seems to be in a rut in Lancaster County, as bulls trade sharply lower early in the week due to the vety good late week demand that pushes packages of graded Number One 90-100 lb bulls up to or above the 200.00 range. Holstein heifers were not well tested this week, with the only de cent test on Tuesday trading sharply higher as buyer attendance increases, therefore heifers moved above the 300.00 barrier. This week the PA Department of Agriculture graded 931 head of bulls and heifers for the two graded sales in Lancaster County. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) has questioned why the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board (PMMB) withdrew proposed pooling regulations after a public hearing was completed, and has asked the board for an explanation of its sudden action. The board’s decision to withdraw the regulations came minutes after a recent joint public hearing conducted by the Senate and House Agriculture Committees in State College. The proposed rule would pool 45 percent of the over-order premium among all Pennsylvania dairy farmers on all milk usages, including cheese, butter, and ice cream. The remaining 55 percent would be dispersed by individual dealer pools, as is the current practice. The over-order premium, set by the PMMB, is the amount paid above the federal order price to dairy farmers for Class I (fluid) milk produced, processed, and sold in Pennsylvania. Before the board’s decision to withdraw the pooling proposal, the regulation was scheduled to be considered by Pennsylvania’s Independent Regulatory Review Commission at a March 27 public meeting. “It is very disheartening that the board chose not to support their own recommendation after taking so many years to make a decision, and after investing two years in the regulatory pro cess,” said Joel Rotz, Pennsylvania Farm Bu reau’s dairy specialist. “PMMB’s chairman did a commendable job presenting the overall issue, so the hurried decision by the board is both a sur prise and a puzzle. “After all the time and effort that has been in vested in this matter by PMMB, dairy farmers and their representatives, it deserves decision in stead of more delay.” Rotz said. “Farm Bureau has asked the board for an explanation of its ac tion.” National Sheep Summary San Angelo, Texas April 1,2003 Report Supplied By USDA At midwest market centers all classes steady.
