Many of the photographers are considered 20th century masters. Prices are in the high thousands and up. Another sign for collectors that something was happening was the acceptance in 1977 of photo graphic images by the National Portrait Gallery and the opening of their photograph department. It’s curator began assembling fine examples from around the coun try that were put on display. This exhibit covered American por trait photography from the 1840 s to the 19405. This gave would-be collectors beginning and cutoff dates.
