When those fancy names are dropped at a social event, you wouldn’t want ev erybody to know you didn’t know what a “voyeuse” is. Imagine your embarrassment if you thought it was the plural of voyeur. Actually, it is a chair with a padded top rail to the back, for an observer to lean on, while the chairs’ occupant played cards. Of course, some objects are known by several names...all of which you should know. One example is the massive cupboard, popular from the 17th to the early 19th century in the Hudson River and Dela ware valleys. It is known as a Kas, a Schrank, a cupboard or a wardrobe. One of my favorite terms is “squab”. This doesn’t refer to a game bird, but removable stuffed cushions; originally used on 17th and 18th century French chairs. So, when some one tells you about the striped squab on his Bergere, clever you will know he is talking Check Out This Week's Featured Recipe On Our Website! www.lancasterfarming.com THIS IS THE SECOND SALE IN A SERIES OF THREE FOR THE HARTLAUB COLLECTION These sales are the first on the Hartlaub property since the 1930’5. What about a wall pocket? This is the term for a ceramic flower-vase made to be attach ed to a wall. They are also known as cornucopia because of their shape. Another strange ceramic name is a pap-boat. Actually a small, boat-shaped bowl for feeding “pap”(cereal or gruel) to infants and invalids. There are some surprises when you actually breakdown a term. For instance, the elegant Cheval glass (a full length mir ror), translates into “horse mir ror”...a mirror large enough to reflect a horse. The ceramic world is full of fancy name descriptions...many in French. A good example would be a pate-sur-pate porce lain vase. This painting tech nique was used in the late 19th century by Sevres, Minton, Meissen and others. The effect is of a cameo, in slight relief the result of successive layering of semi-fluid white slip. The back grounds are tinted. Porcelain pate-sur-pate vase. Minton. Photo cred it: Seidenberg Antiques. New York, N.Y. Help can be found in auction catalogs, especially those with European items. Their descrip tions are an education in them selves. A secretaire-a-abbatant” for instance is a cabinet-shaped piece of furniture, with an up right panel that falls to give a writing surface. When various pieces of Chi nese ceramics are illustrated in color, with descriptions you learn that sometimes French descriptive names are used. “Famille noire” refers to porce lain with a black background. “Famille rose” consists of pink, red and rose colors on the por celain. “Famille verte” is green. “Famille” is family. You can get more help from the various dictionaries listing everything from furniture to glass, silver and ceramics. You too can speak antiquease.
