The improved demand for heavier cattle was spurred by a strong CME feeder cattle fu tures market early in the week. Light weight cattle prices found support as farmers in many areas finally got caught up on fieldwork, whether it was planting com and beans in the Midwest or harvest ing wheat on the Plains. As temperatures heat up, livestock marketing usually slows down and leaves commission men, order buyers, and cattle truckers with the summertime blues. This is already the case in many areas, but cer tain regions are seeing active movement. Producers in the fescue country of lower Missouri are busy moving cattle off grass before the hot and humid “summer slump” sets in, resulting in almost 13,000 head marketed through the Joplin Re gional Stockyards this week. Drought conditions continue to flood Colorado salebams with cow-calf pairs in the fire-ridden Rocky Mountains. Dry conditions are also forcing cattle off dry pastures in the Black Hills of South Da kota. Livestock auctions in places like Ft. Pierre, SD, are seeing receipts of sever al thousand head, when they would nor mally be closed for the summer. Fortu nately the market has been strong for both feeders and replacements, which kept from adding insult to those injured by the record drought. It seems like the cattle industry can’t keep all of its members happy at the same time. Cow-calf producers have enjoyed high calf prices for the last several years, but many of them are currently experi encing desperate times. Cattle feeders have been bogged down in red ink for what seems like forever and are now starting to see a promising situation this fall. For the backgrounder the drill is al ways the same.
