826-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 1,2002 o THE ANTIQUE DETECTIVE Anne Gilbert Women Illustrators Rate High With Collectors In the early 20th century while women were fighting to find their place in the business and art world, the field of illustration of fered some of the earliest oppor tunities. Now, women illustrators are not only accepted on an equal par with their male counterparts, but their work commands top dollar. At the May 11 Illustration House auction, specializing in original illustrations, a Good Housekeeping magazine cover in charcoal, gouache and oil, by Jes sie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) sold more than the $lO,OOO/ 15,000 estimate for a whooping $30,000. A Rose O’Neill (1875-1944) il llustration for Harper’s Bazzar, c. 1909 brought $2,200. O’Neill, is best known for her “kewpies.” Western artist Thomas Hart Ben ton considered her to be “the world’s greatest illustrator.” Many of these women illustra tors, long forgotten, are being re discovered and turn up at the Il lustration House auctions. An example is Rhoda Holmes Nich olls (1854-1938). When one of her watercolors was offered at auc PUBLIC AUCTION ANTIQUES, TOYS, COLLECTIBLES, FURNITURE, COINS, MT. Adding buyer interest was that she taught watercolor techniques under artist William Merritt Chase. Grace Drayton(lB77-1936) won recognition for her Dolly Dingle, Dolly Dimples cartoons. They became popular paper dolls in the 19305. More familiar are her chubby-cheeked children cre ated for Campbell Soup ads. Her original watercolor, pen and ink drawings for paper dolls can sell for more than $2,000. Another pioneer illustrator was Fanny Young Cory (Coony) (1877-1972). She illustrated sto ries for the children’s magazine, St. Nicholas. Her illustrations used humorous line and wash drawings. At auction her work can sell for $4OO to $2,000. If you visit the Capitol build ing in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania, you can see the large murals done in 1902 by Violet Oakley (1874-1961). Examples of illus trations done for magazines are rare. Jessie Willing Gilles- pie (1888-1972) was an early sati rist whose work can sell for more than a thousand dollars. Many of her illustrations for children’s books were black and white sil houettes. Better known is Peggy Bacon (1895-1987. Her humorous illustrations appeared in The New Yorker, Town and Country, and Vanity Fair. Her work is still modestly priced from several hundred dollars to more than a thousand. A popular satirist for The New Yorker magazine in the 1930 s was Helen Hokinson (1893-1949). Her pen, ink and watercolors can sell for $2,000. By the 19305-19405, women il lustrators branched into fields other than children’s subjects and humor. Martha Sawyers began her career illustrating her travels to China and Indonesia. An ex hibit of those paintings brought her to the attention of the Col lier’s Magazine art editor who sent her to the China-Burma- India area during World War 11 as an artist-correspondent.
