ANSWER Eleanor Heavner, Flintstone, Md., wanted to know how to rid an old farm house of flies. They had covered the house with siding and installed new windows, but continue having a problem with flies. Thanks to David Bordner, Enola, who writes that these flies are called cluster flies and adult flies ap pear in large numbers generally on the sunny side of homes. As days shorten and become cooler, duster flies look for houses to winter and typically seek the same home year after year. To control these flies you must treat them before they get into attic and wall voids. This means power spraying and Insecticide preferably a wettable powder or microencapsu lated chemical. It is critical that the siding, overhangs, doors and window frames are treat ed. Timing is important. In Pennsylvania, treat ing should be done between Aug. 30 and early Sept. Check with the extension office in your county for recommendation of a pest control company that provides exterior barrier treat ments and for the best date to apply the insec ticide in your area. ANSWER - John Boiler, Waveland, Ind., wanted to purchase a good used cream sepa rator. Thanks to Elmer Smith, Linden, for sending ex tensive directions from the National Lime Asso ciation. Here is a recap. While lime along with water for whitewashing can be used in some instances, the durability of such a mixture will be improved by adding other materials to the mix. First, make approximately 8 gallons stiff lime paste by slaking 25 pound of quicklime with 10 gallons water or by soaking 50 pounds of hydrated lime in 6 gallons water. Here are a few formulas: • 15 pounds salt, 8 gallons lime paste. Dis solve the salt in 5 gallons water and add solu tion to lime paste. Mix thoroughly and thin to desired consistency with fresh water. • 5 pounds calcium chloride, 8 gallons lime paste: The substitution of calcium chloride for the salt in the previous formula produces a mixture that does not chalk and is quite dur able. The same mixing directions apply. • 25 pounds white Portland cement, 25 pounds hydrated lime. Both the cement and lime should be added together in dry form to about 8 gallons water. After mixing thoroughly a thick slurry will result. Additional water should be added until after further agitation the mixture resembles the consistency of heavy cream. Do not mix more than can be used within a few hours.
