Disc Xpower West Snyder FFA Conducts Food For America Program On Nov. 14, the West Snyder FFA Chapter presented a “Food For America” program at Beaver Adams and West Beaver elemen tary schools. The purpose of the program was to educate fourth grade stu dents about the source of food in America. West Synder FFA members who participated included Melis sa McWilliams, Brandon Her man, Heather Hollenbach, Doug Hollenbach, Amanda Shaffer, Derek Fetterolf, and Hannah Etzler. Amanda Shaffer, SUN Area Dairy Maid, and Melissa McWil liams spend their time explaining to the fourth grade students about how milk gets from the cow to the grocery store. Various dairy products were also dis cussed with the students. Doug Hollenbach, Hannah Etzler, and Derek Fetterolf gave a presentation on sheep, beef, and hogs, respectively. Each of these presentations taught the elementary students the value of specific livestock as food. Heath er Hollenbach gave a presenta tion on chickens and eggs. She showed the students various types of eggs which would be un acceptable in the egg industry. Brandon Herman explained the importance of various crops fed to livestock and how they affect the production of food for peo ple. Following the presentations, the elementary students played “FOODO,” a bingo-style game which emphasizes the impor tance of food, and toured the dairy farm of Glenn and Barb Carper in McClure. The agricultural mechanics team received a gold emblem award at the National FFA Agri cultural Mechanics Career De velopment Event, placing the team fourth in the nation and giving it the highest ranking for any Pennsylvania team. The livestock evaluation team received a silver emblem award at the National FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event. In order to qualify for national competition, the LMH teams placed first at the FFA Conven tion mid-June at Pennsylvania State University’s main campus. LMH’s Hans Herr Chapter ag ricultural mechanics team mem bers are sophomore Alex Ranck, IS, son of James and Joan Ranck, Christiana; senior Kristo pher Good, 17, son of Daniel and Sharon Good, Mountville; junior Darrel Martin, 17, son of Galen and Nancy Martin, Mount Joy; senior Kevin Nolt, 17, son of James and Ruth Ann Nolt, Mount Joy; and senior Timothy Keener, 18, son of Ronald and Fern Keener, Elizabethtown. In dividually, Ranck placed third in the country and received a $9OO scholarship. Teacher Christopher Ochs serves as FFA adviser for the ag mechanics team, and Lem Metzl er is adviser for the livestock team. Two additional members of the Hans Herr FFA chapter were also invited to represent the school at the national conven tion.
