Farmland Preservation Milestone In Chester County NOTTINGHAM (Chester Co.) Pennsylvania Agricul ture Secretary Samuel E. Hayes Jr. recently marked the preser vation of 10,000 acres of farm land in Chester County. Chester County has con sistently shown exemplary commitment to farmland pres ervation.” BALE EDER Created in 1989, the Pennsylvania Agricul tural Land Preserva tion Board oversees the state Farmland Preservation Program, which allows the state and counties to pur chase development rights, referred to as easements. These easements guarantee that farms will remain as agricultural land. At the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Jan. 8, Gov. Ridge an nounced his goal of preserving 100 farms in 100 days as part of his “Growing Greener” program. He called the loss of open space and farmland Pennsylvania’s biggest environmental chal lenge in the new cen tury. Gov. Ridge kept his promise and pre served more than 100 farms by Earth Day, April 22. Gov. Ridge was in Chester County in De cember to sign the five-year, nearly $650 million “Growing Greener” program. Pennsylvania’s larges t-ever investment in its environment. The Farmland Pres ervation Program con tinues to work toward preserving and pro tecting Pennsylvania’s agricultural land for farm families and future generations of Pennsylvanians. Penn sylvania is on the road to becoming the No. 1 state in the nation for the number of acres of farmland preserved. To date, more than 1,300 Pennsylvania farms, totaling more than 162,000 acres of farmland, have been preserved.
