helped to make it possible for
Pennsylvania to preserve farm
land at a pace greater than any
other state.
“I am proud to be here today

Created in 1989, the
Pennsylvania Agricul
tural Land Preserva
tion Board oversees
the state Farmland
Preservation Program,
which allows the state
and counties to pur
chase development
rights, referred to as
easements. These
easements guarantee
that farms will remain
as agricultural land.
At the Pennsylvania
Farm Show on Jan. 8,
Gov. Ridge an
nounced his goal of
preserving 100 farms
in 100 days as part of
his “Growing
Greener” program. He
called the loss of open
space and farmland
Pennsylvania’s biggest
environmental chal
lenge in the new cen
tury. Gov. Ridge kept
his promise and pre
served more than 100
farms by Earth Day,
April 22.
Gov. Ridge was in
Chester County in De
cember to sign the
five-year, nearly $650
million “Growing
Greener” program.
Pennsylvania’s larges
t-ever investment in its
environment.
The Farmland Pres
ervation Program con
tinues to work toward
preserving and pro
tecting Pennsylvania’s
agricultural land for
farm families and
future generations of
Pennsylvanians. Penn
sylvania is on the road
to becoming the No. 1
state in the nation for
the number of acres of
farmland preserved.
To date, more than
1,300 Pennsylvania
farms, totaling more
than 162,000 acres of
farmland, have been
preserved.
