C4-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 18, 1999 Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat Roundup Largest Show In Years HONEY BROOK (Chester Co.) The Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat Roundup was con ducted in early August here at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County. A total of 27 4-H dairy goat projects were exhibited, with ex hibitor participation up 20 percent over last year. This year the show was divided into three breed classes Alpines, Nubians, and Toggen burgs. The pre-4-H Cloverbud and 4-H classes were combined for the show. Dan Torrison of Quakertown not only placed the animals but also instructed the 4-H’ers in how to improve their animals through breeding. In the Alpine breed, Erin Whitesel of Landenbeig captured senior and grand champion with her doe, Lollypop, in the does 1 and 2 years of age class. Andrew Kurtz of Morgantown received the reserve senior and reserve grand champion title in the combined show of pre-4-H and 4-H with Lively, a doe also in the 1 and under 2 years of age category. Joe Batchelder of Glen Mills re ceived reserve senior and reserve grand champion in the 4-H only show with Jellytole, who showed in the 3-5 years of age group. Mar melade, who showed in the 4- to 12-month-old kid class, was the junior champion for Erin White sel, with Andrew Kurtz winning the reserve junior ribbon with Merry, who also showed in the 4- to 12-month-old class. In the 4-H -only show, reserve junior champ ion went to Chad McKee of Coatesville with Mist Melissa Wertz of Downing town swept top honors in the Tog genburg class when Cassy, who showed in the S years of age and older class, was named senior and grand champion. Melissa also re ceived the reserve senior and re serve grand champion with Muf fin, a doe in the 3- to S-year-old class. The junior champion in this 16-Year-Old Mercersburg Youth Takes Top Honors At Fair MERCERSBURG (Franklin Co.) The Franklin County 4-H Beef Club held its annual junior market steer show in August at the Franklin County Fair. There were 21 exhibitors in the fitting and showmanship competition class es. The judge was Doug Musser from Mount Joy. Judge Doug Mjusser compli mented the youth for a job well done. Matt Hawbaker, 16, Mercers burg, was named the champion fit ter of the show. Justin Conner of Loudon Road, Chambersburg, was named champion shower. Matt Hawbaker also showed the grand champion steer and Jodi Meyers of Greencastle showed the reserve. In the open division, Jordan Conner showed the grand cham pion steer and his brother Justin Conner showed the reserve. division went to Kokomo, a kid under four months of age, and re- serve junior champion to Raisen ette, a 12- to 24-month-old Idd; both owned by Melissa. In the Nubian Breed, Torrison selected a 3- to S-year-old doe named Midnight, owned by Ver onica Bates of Gradyville, for senior and grand champion. Re serve senior and reserve grand champion went to Veronica*s<loe, Buttercup, who showed in the five years of age and older class. Pop py Seed, a kid in the 12- to 24-month-of-agc class, also own ed by Veronica, was awarded junior champion. Reserve junior champion went to Melissa Wertz with Jenny, a kid in the 4- to 12-month-old class. In the senior competition, Melissa Wertz received champion showman and Veronica Bates was awarded champion fitter. In the first-year division. Erin Whitesel received both champion showman and champion fitter awards. In the pre-4-H or Cloverbud competi tion, Selena Bari of Downingtown won the champion fitter award and Andrew Kurtz was named champion showman.
