Greenpeace Lawsuit Against Bt Plants Lacks Scientific Merit WASHINGTON, D.C. - A lawsuit filed by Greenpeace and other activist organiza tions against genetically engineered Bt plants lacks scientific merit, said Jay J. Vroom, president, American Crop Protection Association (AGFA). The lawsuit, charging that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency violated the law and agency regula tions in approving Bt plants, was filed by Greenpeace, the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements, the Center for Food Safety and organic farmers. It follows a December 1997 petition to the EPA by the groups. “Both the petition and the lawsuit are totally without merit,” said Vroom. “EPA thoroughly assessed the safe ty of these products or they would not have registered them for use by farmers.” Since no evidence exists that Bt plant pesticides are toxic to humans or other tar get organisms, Vroom said there is no basis for altering the regulatory status of exist ing products or denying regis tration of new products. As a result, the AGFA Biotechnology Committee, which represents the majority of the companies registering and selling Bt improved hybrids, has endorsed an agreement-in principal with the National Corn Growers Association on a plan for the year 2000 to manage insect resistance to the new Bt-corn technology. “Bt plants offer numerous and substantial economic, environmental, and social benefits,” said Vroom. “We want to ensure proper use so that this new important tech nology remains available to growers who are embracing it with enthusiasm.” MILK AMERICAN jjjj=r HYBRID SEED J CORN (Quantities are limited) 207 111 DAY Rds or Flats $69.50 (80.000 Kernels)
