820-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 20, 1999 Ag Department Expands Nutrition Program For Needy HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co ) - On behalf of Gov. Tom Ridge, Agriculture Secretary Samuel E. Hayes, Jr. announced that beginning Feb. 1, the department will be involving more farmers’ market vendors in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. Almost 475 vendors participated in the program at 330 market sites across Pennsylvania. It is estimated that the program generated an additional $1.26 million in sales for Pennsylvania’s farmers. Eligibility for the nutrition program is limited to pregnant and nursing women, who receive $25 per year; and 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds, who receive $l5 per year. Checks may be used by eligible participants or their parents or guardians between July 1 and Oct. 31.
