Then you won’t want to miss the second annual Home Gardeners School held on Saturday, March 13 from 8:30 to 3:30 at the Sun Area Career and Technology Center in New Berlin, Union County. Presented by the Penn State Cooperative Extension in coop eration with area Garden Clubs this program will have some thing for everyone, from the novice gardener to one with years of experience. The individuals competing in public speaking contests were Tyler Swanson, Beth Frey, and Cheri Lake. Tyler and Beth com peted in the extemporaneous contest and Cheri will be pre sented the FFA creed. The Meats Evaluation team placed Ist and will compete at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo., in November. Those members are Bob Karr, who placed first, Allan Herr, Jr., Adam Nissley, and Dan McMichael. The Poultry Evaluation and Technology team placed second and will compete at the Eastern States Exposition in Massachu setts in September. The team consisted of Garrett Neff, first Place, Cheri Lake, Josh Murry, and Julia Greider. Tyler Swanson placed first in extemporaneous public speak mg and Beth Frey placed third. Tyler will represent Pennsyl vania at the National FFA Extemporaneous Public Speaking ev ent in Kansas City, Mo. Dave Warihay received first Place m the agriculture sales, service, and mechanics state Proficiency. Randy Charles was selected as the top agriculture student in specialty crop produc t'on. Two main sessions in the morning are followed by your choice of three sessions in the afternoon. Manor Team On Sept. 17-20, Penn Manor’s Poultry Evaluation and Technology Team and Tyler Swanson went to the Big E Eastern States Exposition in Springfield Mass. The Poultry Evaluation and Technology Team consisted of Juli Greider, Garrett Neff, Cheri Lake, and Josh Murry and placed first as a team. Garrett Neff placed first as an individual. Tyler Swanson went to Eastern States for extemporaneous public speak ing. He placed in the top 10. The Poultry Evaluation and Technology Career Development Event consisted of identifying chicken parts and grading chick en carcasses. Eggs were graded for interior and exterior quality. Live birds were placed according to the quality of the birds. They also gave oral reasons for the placing of broiler/breeders and carcasses. There was also a writ ten test on the knowledge of the poultry industry. A team activity consisted of having 20 minutes to research a topic relating to the poultry industry and then 10-15 minutes to present it to a panel of judges. The presenta tion was followed by a few ques tions asked by the judges. The extemporaneous public speaking contest consisted of picking a subject out of a hat and having 30 minutes to pre pare a 4-6 minute speech about your topic. After the speech, the judges have five minutes to ask questions about your knowledge of the topic and ag industry. During their spare time, they had time to explore the largest state agriculture fair in New England. There were rides, games, exhibits and lots of fun.
