816-lancaster Fanning, Saturday, October 10, 1998 Sarah Boyd Clinches LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Fanning Staff NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster Co.) Sarah Boyd gambled and won. She showed Jordan, her heavyweight market lamb at four different county fain. The firat three times Jordan took grand champion in the non-sale market lamb division. The fourth time Sarah decided to enter him in the sale division at New Holland Fair. After some tough competition Sarah clinched the trophy and her dad Kerry Boyd said, "It’s a rate feat to keep a lamb at 12:00 (mark et condition) for four weeks.” How did she do it? ‘Tm not telling. It’s a family secret,” the 17-ycar-old from Ephrata said. However, both daughter and dad stressed that to do so, you must fust have a lamb bred with show quality and keep it solid with exercise. “Barb knows what she’s doing,” Boyd said of the lamb that had been purchased from Barb Bam bury of B&B Lambs in Ohio. Ironically, the reserve champion market lamb had also been pur chased from B&B. Shown by Rachel Day. daughter of Cliff and Anna Day of New Holland, the reserve named Scooter was condi tioned by running ramps. Lightweight market lamb champion and reserve were shown by Travis Donough of Manbeim and Jimmy Zimmerman, Reinholds. Showing the medium weight champion and reserve respectively were brother and sister Brad and April Lehman of Willow Street The non-sale market lamb champion was a bred and owned sheep named Sonar and shown by Jen Zimmerman, Reinholds. Showing the non-sale lamb reserve champion was Heather Zeigler of Lititz. The sheep had been purchased from the Mid- Atlantic Sale. In the breeding sheep competi tion, the grand champion over all breeds was a Hampshire ewe shown by Jimmy Zimmerman. The reserve champion was a Suf folk ewe shown by Andrew Gerhart. Jimmy Zimmerman also showed die champion and reserve champion ram and ewe in both the Cheviot and Hampshire breeds. Columbia champion ram was shown by Gabriel Bowman and his Showmanship champions ars from left, Sarah Boyd, senior division; Samantha Dlssinger, novice; and Adam Zurin, Intermediate. sister Kelsey showed the champ ion ewe. Kelsey also showed the champion Polypay ram and her sis ter Dallassa showed the champion ewe. Gabriel came back into the show ring to claim both champion ram and ewe titles in the Natural Colored breeds. Corriedale competition was swept by Travis Redmond of Mohnton. His Corridalc ram went on to become the reserve champ ion ram overall breeds. Travis also took Shropshire grand champion ram and ewe with his brother Tra vis giving him some competition in the show ring. In the Dorset division, both polled and homed entries com peted with Jennifer Zimmerman taking both champion ram and ewe. The Dorset ram went on to be named the champion ram over all breeds. Jennifer also showed the grand champion Southdown ewe. In addition to the champion Suf folk ewe, shown by Andrew Ger hart, that went on to be reserve champion ewe and breeding sheep over all breeds, Adam Zurin showed the grand champion ram in that breed. Alex Lauffer swept the Romney division. Judge Paul Wissinger of Berks County selected Sarah Boyd as senior showmanship champion. Adam Zurin was first in the divi sion for 2-3-years experience. The 11-year-old had previously cap tured trophies for showing at both 4-H Roundup and E-town this year. He and his sister Sara have a small flock on their parents’ Judy and Gary Zurin’s farm in Mount Joy. Although the Zurins did not capture a championship, their homebred flock is improving as both siblings took some first places in their market lamb classes. Samantha Dissinger took a first in showmanship in the novice divi sion. The 10-year-old from Rein holds was commended by the judge for holding the lamb’s head erect at all times. Samantha, daughter of Dawn and Steve Smith, said that she decided to show sheep through the influence of her neighbors Jim and Jen Zimmerman.
