Family Living Focus Chester Co. Extension Agent Becky Scotland Celebrating Diversity: Learning to Play Together We live and work in a world filled with diversity. Our young children (2 to 5 years) are exposed to many different expe riences every day through their play activities. To ensure that children receive a well-balanced knowledge base, we need to pro vide a wide variety of opportuni ties. One such area is the cele bration of our diversity. Parents and caregivers naturally provide activities that help children leam about the world around them. Through a child’s play we can do the following: •address a child’s fear of dif ferences •help children live coopera tively with others •prevent prejudices in chil dren •experience a variety of social environments Children begin to notice dif ferences very early in life. This classification process carries over from the toys and objects they play with to the people they encounter each day. Many adults have had embarrassing experiences of being in a public place and the child pointing and loudly com menting on another person’s dif ferences—handicap, skin color or age. As you can see from the development chart below, chil dren begin to make these associ ations very early in life. y:c00& Agriculture - Residential - Commercial Invest In Concrete, Quafii CALL FOR FREE ESTIMATES CONTACT AND SEE HOW AFFORDABLE ROY SENSENIG CONCRETE WALLS CAN BE 717-355-0726 Authorized Dealer For K& ©f© E II E CONCRETE It Ini E 'Q) E walls, me. Through a variety of activities children can experience new cul tures. Highlighting the foods, music, clothing and celebrations of other lands makes the experi ences real to children. Families can add activities into the child's daily schedule and celebrate the diversity of our world. •Foods: Select breads from 12’ x 83’ Diameter Circular Manure Storage 531 Hollander Rd., New Holland, PA 17557 For All Your Concrete Walls And Construction Needs Work That Will Last A Lifetime stone Concrete Products WORTHINGTON (Armstrong Co.)
