A whopping herd average increase propelled the Ramsey Cooper family's Holstein herd to the top of York County’s Dairy Hod Im provement Association (DHIA) list for the 1997 lest year. Those milk output boosts earned tjie Delta-area dairying operation several top honors at the York DHIA’s annual meeting and recognition dinner, held Novem ber 19 at the Shrewsbury Fire Company Hall. With a 4 12-month increase of 3,562 pounds of milk and 121 pounds of protein, the Cooper herd earned plaques for both high est herd milk and protein increas es, as well as high herd in the county, with an average of 28,953 pounds of milk, 1,008 pounds but terfat and 909 pounds protein. The honor for overall herd manage ment likewise went to the Cooper family, whose 75-head herd, man aged by son Scott, is on a 3X daily milking schedule. Highest individual for 305-day lactations among the county’s cows on test was Bea, an indi vidual from the Earl Fuhrman herd, Hanover, completing a 39,095-pound milk record. High 305-day protein producer was Poppy, a herd member of Smy ser’s Richlawn Farm, York, com pleting a 1,180-pound protein re cord. The Smyser herd was cited for two high lifetime production awards for cows removed with the year from the herd. They were Joelyn, the county’s top lifetime record for the past year, with an eight-lactation total of 278,297 pounds, and Sally, totalling 267,786 pounds production in nine lactations. Honored as the lowest somatic cell county herd in the county were brothers Glenn and Gary Growl, Airvillc, with an average SCC count of 111,000. hr a brief review of the county's DHIA-year accomplishments, president Jon Sprenlde noted that 13 county herds had produced in creases of more than 2,000 pounds milk during the recently-com pleted test year. During the annuel business meeting, Philip Laugh man, York, and Leonard Greek, Delta, were elected for three-year terms to the county board of direc tors, while a third director position remained unfilled. Completing their terms were Keith Eiscnhart, Ed Calhoun and Don Avery.
