Lebanon County Daily Heid Improvement Association last week held its annual meeting and awards banquet at the Myer siown Church of the Brethren in Myerstown. Phares Musser of Myerstown presided with Marlin Getz of Myerstown offering the invocation. Members heard reports from Dale Hoover, its stale director, David Shenk 111, Pa.DHIA region al manager, Dave Slusser, general manager of Pa.DHIA; and Galen Kopp, county extension dairy agent Directors whose terms expire this year include Jay Good of Lebanon, Phares Musser of Ncw manstown, and Jay Weaver of Myerstown. In an election of new directors, Dave Groff of Lebanon, Bruce Heilinger of Newman stown, and Kirby Horst of New manstown, were selected to serve on the board. In a report of county records, Lebanon had 117 herds with an average of 73.2 cows, with produc tion of 22,203 pounds milk, 780 pounds fat, and 708 pounds protein. The milk and protein averages were the top values for members of ‘the Pennsylvania Dairy Herd Improvement Association, while the fat production was second among Pa.DHIA members. The average total feed cost per cow was $1,191, and increase of $66 per cow. while the average cow profitability, expressed in the difference of income received over feed costs, per cow, was $1,857, an increase of $3ll. The feed cost per hundred weight of milk produced was $5.36, and decrease of 55 cents per hundredweight Lebanon DHIA recognizes top herd and individual cow produc tion, lifetime production, low somatic cell count and herd management In herd management recogni tion, Terry Shuey of Little Hill Farm, Lebanon, received the first place plaque, while also taking the top award for low somatic cell count with a level of 99,000. The award for having the top herd-average milk production went to David and Christine Wil liams erf Jonestown whose herd (they graze) produced 28.836 pounds of milk per cow. The Williamses also had the highest producing cow among county DHIA members with their “Sun M cow making 41,289 pounds of milk, 1,265 pounds of protein and 1,436 pounds of fat Donald Krall of Lebanon received an award for his cow Sta cy, which left the herd this year, for making 284,725 pounds of milk in 11 lactations. The award for having the top herd-average production for pro tein and fat went to David Brandt and sons, with 925 pounds of pro tein and 1,066 pounds of Eat Gate Farms, who was recently in ducted into the Pennsylvania Hol stein Hall of Fame. Penn Gate showed the reserve grand champion, the best three fe males, the champion female bred and owned, and won the premier breeder and premier exhibitor honors at the Eastern National Holstein Show held in Harrisburg in September. Junior Holstein production award winners were recognized by Phil Van Lieu. He introduced Clayton Wood, Nathan Rhodes, Charles Brown, Ashleigh Van Lie&, and J6y Hess and announced that Wood and Hess were overall production winners.
