A2B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 1, 1997 HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) A Pennsylvania Dairy Futures Conference has been sche duled for Dec. 10-11 in State College. The deadline for registration is Nov. 11. The “dairy futures” name does not refer to trading on market con tracts; it refers to the future of the dairy industry. The event is sponsored in part by the Pennsylvania Dairy Stakeholders a group erf dairy industry people more formally organized recently from efforts begun several years ago in an effort to bring some cooperation among all in the industry in Pennsylvania. Also sponsoring the conference is the Penn State College of Agri cultural Sciences, the Pennsylva nia Department of Agriculture, and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. The reason the organization was formed was because the industry was faced with the 199 S Farm Bill (which eventually was passed in 1996) and dramatic changes that were preceived to be inevitable to occur in the dairy industry. While representatives and the then-secretary of agriculture held public hearings in an attempt to gain some policy consensus within the dairy industry, it became appa rent that the industry was divided among its separate interests production, processing, market ing and service. Under the leadership of former state Secretary of Agriculture Boyd Wolff, along with leaders from the various industry and gov ernment sectors, the group met informally at first to attempt to dis cover common interests and goals. The rationale behind bringing together the various industry peo ple was to discover what could be We’re Stock So You’ll Be Re Fo Sn Maryland's Largest Toro Wheel Horse Dealer ol previously owned tractors LAWSON’S OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENTS \ „ 113 WEST MAIN ST (RTE. 144), NEW MARKET, MD f l-800-894-5555 *3Ol-831 -9153 \ Dairy Futures Pa. done to strengthen the position of the Pennsylvania dairy industry to handle the oncoming changes, and to rind some common ground. While envisioning was part of that first and subsequent process, characterized more by fact- and opinion-sharing discussions, the group has become more solidified and formal. Last year, Alan Bair, formerly a community relations director for the former Atlantic Breeders Cooperative (mergered with other cooperatives), was hired by Penn State University as director of dairy industry relations. In effect, his job was to facilitate the organi zation and development of the stakeholders identified through those earlier meetings. During an August 27 meeting, the Pennsylvania Dairy Stakehol ders formally elected a board of directors and approved a set of bylaws. It has adopted the mission state ment, “Facilitating the viability and expansion of the dairy industry in Pennsylvania.” The annual meeting of the orga nization is to be held 4 p.m., Dec. 10, at the Days Inn Penn State, 240 South Pugh St., State College. According to an October news letter from the Bair, elected as Pa. Dairy Stakeholder board president was Philip Kimmel, president of Keystone Farm Credit. Elected vice president was Lew is Gardner, vice president of Milk Marketing Inc. as well as a dairy producer. Named secretary/ treasurer was Betty Reibson, a Sul livan County commissioner and a dairy producer.
