Instead, they buy short bred and open cows at auctions and private sales and bring them into the milking herd as replace ments at lower cost. With this method they give no considera tion to herd average, seeking only to get the most milk from the cows while they are In the milking line. The farm has been In the family since 1979. They have been farming this farm for only four years. From a start of 22 cows they have developed the herd that included a total of 125 head with young stock. Michael grew up on a dairy farm and then sold the herd and was out of the dairy business for eight years. But he says the problems off the farm are the same as on the farm, and he pre fers the farming way of life. They farm several hundred acres, mostly rented ground and raise alfalfa and corn to feed the cows.
