At Shamrock Farms, Edward and Sandra Kelly, Montrose,
milk 50 Holstein cows, but they raise no replacements.
Instead, they buy short bred and open cows at auctions and
private sales and bring them into the milking herd as replace
ments at lower cost. With this method they give no considera
tion to herd average, seeking only to get the most milk from the
cows while they are In the milking line. The farm has been In
the family since 1979. They farm 310 acres of corn and hay. A
nephew, Doug Cosier, and another hired person help on the
farm too. Edward and Sandra have one child, Joanna, 10.

At Forks Mountain Holstein Farms, Michael and Nadine
Moiyneux, Forksvllle, In Sullivan County, milk 60 registered
Holsteins that produce 21,600 pounds of milk. They have been
farming this farm for only four years. From a start of 22 cows
they have developed the herd that included a total of 125 head
with young stock.
Michael grew up on a dairy farm and then sold the herd and
was out of the dairy business for eight years. But he says the
problems off the farm are the same as on the farm, and he pre
fers the farming way of life. They farm several hundred acres,
mostly rented ground and raise alfalfa and corn to feed the
cows. They havethree children, Davina, 12; Serena, 5, and Dal
ton, 2.
