Students from New York state attended the convention to com pete in various leadership con tests, receive degrees and awards, and to participate in many leader ship workshops and tours. Penn Yan FFA members who attended were Jen Disbrow, Matt Fritz, Billy Hand, Natalie Jensen, Matt Lewis, Emily Lilyea, Mike Lilyea, Jim McElwee, Andrew Miller, Muffy Nelson, Marcy Quackenbush, Karl Roemmelt, Aaron and Steve Vaughan. The chapter members really did a good job of putting Penn Yan FFA on the map. The chapter had many first-time accomplishments and many members won at the state level. One of the most exciting con tests for the FFA members was the junior creed contest that Emily Lilyea competed in. Emily was the first person from Penn Yan to ever compete at state level in the junior creed contest She took second place. Marcy Quackenbush won the title reporter of the year for sub mitting numerous articles to many newspapers throughout the year. Marcy was Penn Van’s first-ever reporter of the year. Another first was the FFA Con vention Yearbook Award. Penn Van FFA sold the most ads than any other chapter, and Karl Roem melt won a trophy for being the highest selling individual. Another exciting contest that members competed in was the ag mechanics team. Those that com peted were Mike Lilyea, Andrew Miller, Karl Roemmelt, and Steve Vaughan. They placed first out of five teams. Contestants had to complete a written exam, and demonstrate solving and hands-on performance skills. At the National FFA Conven tion in November, Penn Yan will be representing New Yoik State and competing against many other states for the national title. The Penn Yan FFA Chapter donates money each year to the State FFA Association. The chap ter has contributed more than $7,000 throughout the Penn Yan’s FFA lifetime. The Penn Yan Chapter of FFA won the Bronze Eagle Award for lifetime contributions. Five Penn Yan FFA members received individual accomplish ment awards. The members were Matt Scutt, ag placement; Natalie Jensen, dairy management; Tim Christiansen, dairy production; Matt Fritz, forestry; and Karl Roemmelt, greenhouse management Mike Lilyea took second in the state for his Fruit and Vegetable Production Proficiency Award for his employment at his family farm. Marcy Quackenbush took third in the state for her Fruit and Vegetable Production Proficiency Award. Marcy’s proficiency con sisted of employment at C.M. Hansen’s Farm. Marcy Quacken bush also took first in the state for her Small Animal Care Proficien cy Award. Marcy is employed at the Eastview Veterinary Clinic. She will be representing New York state at the National Con vention for her Small Animal Care Proficiency Award. Marcy also played in the New York State FFA Band for her sec ond year in a row. Last year she was Penn Van’s first FFA member to be a part of the State FFA Band. Mike Lilyea won the District 8 Star Empire Degree for his Empire Degree application in the field of fruit and vegetable pro duction. Marcy Quackenbush also won the District 8 Star Empire Degree for her empire degree application in the field of ag placement. Jennifer Disbrow won a $5OO scholarship to Monisville College for her involvement in the FFA and her work experience program. Natalie Jensen placed first in the Dairy Breed Award. She has been Penn Van’s first Dairy Breed Award winner in many years. The Penn Van FFA had five recipients for the Empire Degree. This is the most Empire Degree winners that Penn Yan FFA has had at one time.
