Haenlein recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Noitheast Section of the American Society of Animal Sci ence and the Northeast Branch of the American Dairy Science Asso ciation in recognition for his out standing contribution to dairy and animal sciences. “It was an honor and a surprise to receive this award from my col leagues,” said Haenlein, a profes sor in the department of animal and food science at the University of Delaware (UD), where he teaches classes and laboratories in dairy science and animal behav ior. He is also Cooperative Exten sion dairy specialist and is respon sible for Delaware Dairy Herd Im provement Program. In addition to his German doc torate in animal nutrition, he com pleted a doctorate at the Univer sity of Wisconsin-Madison in dairy science in 1966, and return ed to UD. In 1974, he became full professor. Throughout his career, Haen lein has been recognized for con tributions to his credit in several areas. With more than 90 research publications, he was one of the early reporters on the critical im portance of length of fiber and the effects of the physical form of diet on normal rumen digestion and normal milk composition. He demonstrated that sorghum silage was a profitable alternative to com silage in the often drought stricken mid-Atlantic region.
