Grade, chairman and chief execu tive officer of Harnischfeger Industries, Inc., to its board of directors. “We arc extremely pleased to add directors the stature of Tom Urban and Jeff Grade,” said Jean- Mackey, Head Genetics Research DEKALB, 111.—Dekalb Gene tics Corporation announced today that Catherine Mackey and John Pfund have both been promoted to the position of vice president, research, and will together lead the company’s integrated seed research organization. Previously, Mackey was direc tor of Dekalb’s Discovery Research, the company’s biotech nology program, and Pfund was director, research, heading up Dekalb’s conventional corn breeding program in the 110 RM and earlier maturities. Under the new structure, Mack ey and Pfund will share responsi bility for Dekalb’s com breeding stations worldwide. Mackey will also continue to head biotechnolo gy research and Pfund will also Governor ANNAPOLIS, Md. Gover nor Parris N. Glendening request ed a disaster designation for farm ers in 12 Maryland counties who have suffered an estimated 40 per cent or more in crop losses this summer because of drought and heat in July and August Crop losses were particularly bad in soybeans and com for grain. The counties Governor Glendening has requested help for are Wicomico, Worcester, Somer set, Dorchester, Talbot Queen Anne’s, Caroline, St. Mary’s, Charles, Calvert Anne Arundel, and Prince George’s. Gavin G. Grim Two To Directors Pierre Rosso, Case president and chief executive officer. “Tom and Jeff’s backgrounds make them ideal candidates for Case’s board and I am confident both will be assets to us as we seek to further improve our performance and prospects.” Urban has served in executive positions with Pioneer since 1974 and was appointed chairman and chief executive officer of the $1.5 Pfund To lead research for soybean, sorg hum, alfalfa, and sunflower. Pfund joined Dekalb in 1975 as a corn breeder and has served in positions of increasing responsi bility. In 1989, he was named associate research director and he then became director of agronom ic services in 1993. In 1994, he was promoted to a director of research. Pfund earned his docto rate and a master of science degree in plant breeding from the Univer sity of Minnesota in Minneapolis. This new side discharge spreader is available as a single or tandem axle unit. The struck level capacity is 1,400 gallons or approximately 300 bushels heaped. The patented twin auger design features a 20 inch left auger that moves material forward to 12 forged-steel discharge hammers. Company DEKALB, 111.—Dekalb Gene tics Corporation said that it has received notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for claims to com cells that have been transformed via electro poration technology. Electroporation, a method of introducing foreign genes into com cells with an electrical pulse, in an alternative to introducing foreign genes with a gene gun. “Electroporation is a viable means of producing genetically transformed, fertile corn plants, and we expect these patent claims to offer licensing opportunities,” said Bruce P. Bickner, Dekalb’s chairman and chief executive billion seed company in 1984. He is retiring from Pioneer and has announced plans to teach at the Harvard Business School. Urban, who has both undergraduate and MBA degrees from Harvard, also serves as a director of Equitable of lowa Companies and Sigma Aldrich. Grade has been chairman and chief executive officer of Har nischfegcr since 1993. He is also a director of Coeur D’Alene Mines Corporation, Crucible Materials Corporation, and Measurex Corporation, With the addition of Urban and Grade, the Case board has now expanded to eight members. Ag Secretary Alerts HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) —When buying firewood, consumers should be careful to make sure they don’t get stuck with the short end of the stick, according to Agriculture Secre tary Charles C. Brosius. “Firewood must be sold by the cord, or some fraction thereof,” Brosius said. “Consumers should be aware that the amount of fire wood they’re buying must con form to a specific measurement standard.” This new side discharge spreader Is available as a single or tandem axle unit. The struck level capacity Is 1,400 gallons or approxi mately 300 bushels heaped. Allowed Patent Claims officer. “These claims are also sig nificant because they broaden the scope of a patent on the electropo ration process to make transgenic com that Dekalb received earlier in the year.” In January 1993, Dekalb was awarded a U.S. patent (#5,384,253) for a method of pro ducing genetically transformed corn with electroporation. The two patent claims go hand in hand, covering both the electroporation method itself and the resulting transformed cells that make up a com plant. Cargill To Insect-Resistant Hybrids MINNEAPOLIS. Minn.—Cargill Hybrid Seeds and Mycogen Plant Sciences have entered into a distribution agree ment through which Cargill deal ers will distribute Mycogen’s NaturcGard™ insect-resistant hydrid seed com for planting in 1996. On Aug. 8, Mycogen received Environmental Protection Agency approval to market com hybrids genetically engineered with a Bt gene to produce a protein that pro tects them from both first and sec ond brood European com borer. Cargill will distribute the first of To Firewood A cord of firewood must equal 128 cubic feet For example, a neatly stacked rack of firewood measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long would measure 128 cubic feet, thus constituting a cord. The President’s Club consists of the top 10 performing dealers in North America. The presentation was made by Badger’s Vice President, Sales and Marketing Stan West and President and CEO Bob Hartsock during a banquet held recently at The slightly raised 18 inch right auger moves material rearward while keeping the left auger even ly charged with material, reducing pressure and overloading of material at the front of the machine. The 8014 joins the 8018, 8024, and 8030 Pro Twin models with capacities ranging from 1,240 to 3,080 gallons. These units handle the heaviest pen pack material with ease. Separately, Dekalb announced it has recently been awarded patent #5,445,961 for a method of producing fertile corn plants from microspores, which are immature pollen grains. Microspores are an important target for transforma tion because they enable direct selection of recessive traits and reduce the number of subsequent breeding steps to develop com mercial com hybrids. “This patent reflects another aspect of our patent portfolio, which includes some of the technologies—such as tissue culture —that underlie gene tic engineering,” Bickner said. Distribute these new hybrids, NG7059, under the Mycogen label. James Hopkins, vice president and general manager of Mycogen Plant Sciences, said that Cargill’s strong distribution network in the western com belt, where com bor er damage costs farmers hundreds of millions of dollars in yield los ses each year, makes the distribu tion arrangement attractive to Mycogen. ‘This will enable us to bring these new insect-resistant pro ducts to more farmers sooner than we could working alone,” Hopk ins said.
